In all honesty, unless you're getting a helluva deal on a PC (keep checking Hot Deals, I suppose) just get an Xbox. You're going to feel pretty stupid if you only play games occasionally and still blow $800+ on a good gaming PC.

$50 per game, right? Do the math :) And you don't need a $700 PC to play X-box style games... A $500 PC will do.

The real question is what sort of games you want to play. If you like racing or sports or shooters, you could probably be happy with either an XBox or a PC. If you want to play Age of Empires or Warcraft 3, the XBox isn't going to help much there.

I wouldn't have to pay anywhere near $50 per a game... perhaps more like $5 or so :D

Each platform has its own killer apps.

Halo isn't coming out for PC till late this year.
Splinter Cell for Xbox doesn't have frame rate issues and require an UBAR-COMPUTAR
Many games are on both platforms.

You just have to decide if you want to play CONSOLE games or PC games.

If he doesn't have an Xbox, there are a lot of games that are $20.

PC games cost money too, unless you download them. You can download Xbox games too, if that is what you are referring to.

You can play PC game demos and never get tired. And that costs no money. No, I'm not referring to what you call "downloading" games :)

I went through the exact same dilemma a year and a half ago. I already had an old PC (K62-300)...slow, but surfed fine and ran office apps fine. What it couldn't do fine was play newer games. I finally went with the Xbox, knowing that upgrading my PC to something worthwhile would have cost much more than the Xbox. Plus, the Xbox doubles as a DVD player, saving me an additional ~$100 down the road for one of those. I haven't regretted my decision once. Xbox has killer games. Yeah, it cannot do strategy games like a PC, but in IMO, it does every other genre of game better than a PC (for much less cost). If I were you, I'd save yourself some hard earned cash and buy the Xbox. If your primary concern is gaming, this is the logical choice. :)

No it's not. As stated before it matters what type of game you want to play. FPS, MMORPG, RPG's, Sims and Strategy (turn based and real time) are still more dominate on the PC side. When comparing FPS all you need to do is compare UT2K3 w/ Unreal Championship and you'll notice the console version doesn't hold a candle to the PC version. Halo is good though.

Plus..

It seems like the majority of the people here are teens w/ limited income. So of course their going to tell you to go with the Xbox.

I remember when I thought $700 was a lot of money. Ohh.. $700 big bucks.

Hell, I'm 25, make *decent* money and $700 is a pretty good chunk of money to spend on something frivolous like a gaming computer.

It is for something as frivolous as a gaming computer.
But I guess it all depends on what your values are. I suppose for an audiophile, $3000 isn't a lot of money for an amp.

It's all relative.

Well you keep forgetting that you can do a lot more with the computer besides playing games. And if your machine is capable of playing games, you can do other things such as programming, composing music or a movie, CAD work, putting together a picture album, burning cd's, etc..

Gaming doesn't have to be the only thing you need to do when thinking about purchasing a "gaming computer."

And I'm sorry, but I think it is. I guess the fact that I'm married and own my own home changes that opinion a bit. I can walk into home depot and far better things to dump $700 on than a gaming computer that is worth half it's value in about 3 months.
