Should my friend get flamed for this?

Recently a group of us went to the Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore for dinner. After dinner we walk back to our car and a homeless person starts following us. He told us a story that he'd only been on the street for 6 days (while smoking a joint) in a quite eloquent fashion for a street person. So after the sympathy pitch my buddy gives the transient $10. After that the homeless guy followed us to the car and was actually quite friendly. He told us about how he had gotten into a fight with a bunch of hispanics outside of a club the other day and he he tried to diffuse the situation, but all hell broke loose when they said "that n!gga's loco!" With that we were in the car, and my buddy's girlfriend proceeded to pwn him.

Never EVER give bums money. You at best only keep them down, at worst you help an addiction. Instead, donate to homeless shelters, pantries and outreaches that help the homeless get back on their feet.

You know how you make bums go away? Tell them to. Don't be shy. Be firm, a bit rude, but not cruel.

It works every time.

I remember chasing a bum down the streen in Toronto. He tried to take my money when I was getting food.

Well, I think he was a bum.

Kinda reminds me of when I was in Atlanta last weekend coming from the Vortex and walking by 4 drug dealers... they weren't even aware of me until I walked right past them. The dealers were facing the opposite direction while I was facing the same direction except that I was walking in their direction, on the same side of the street. It was funny since I was like damn this seems sort of like GTA. They asked if I needed anything, said no thanks, the last guy asked me to give him a ride to the West End, and I laugh responding with "yeah right, like I'm heading that way" lol. Same guy even asked for some money but I just tell em that I only have a penny, and don't wanna seem disrespectful just giving him a penny. Overall the ATL has the friendliest and least aggressive drug dealers (in Midtown at least) that I've ever encountered, they were pretty cool actually.

Oh and I had almost $400 in cash in my pocket too lol.

I'll give a bum a dollar if he is doing something entertaining. Your buddy is an idiot for giving the guy a $10.

depends if your friend goal was to provide him more money for dope and drink...he succeeded.

If his goal was to help the man, despite his good intentions , he failed.

great advice.

why give them $$ to go buy more drugs and booze? instead, if anything, bring them some food.

we have this local homeless guy who has a dog. periodically, i have brought him food and also brought dog food for the dog.

eh... candyass isn't a very good word for it. maybe too gullible though, and a bit of a softie.

i'm not a prick to homeless folks, i just kinda ignore them. $10 is way too much to give them though... maybe 10 cents

that and/or mental illness is why they are on the street. i think giving food instead of $$ still applies.

But every bum can benefit from outreaches and shelters.

And I promise you every bum will remain a bum if people keep giving them money.

Yep. Some of them have moved on to harder stuff, like crack.

maybe not, but think of it this way, if they are living on the streets something is probably pretty wrong with them. IF they are a drug or alcohol abuser than giving them moeny only feeds their habit and keep them from seeking help. If they are mentally unstable then again giving them moeny only keeps them from seeking treatment. And if they are just plain lazy then giving them moeny just makes them even lazier. Pretty much no long term good can come from it.

there is a new bum on the streets here that pisses me off. reason being, he's young, maybe 20, and doesn't even look homeless. he just asks people for money all day. he's the only bum that pisses me off... it's like... get a @#&ing job you hoser. geez

it just annoys me the way he intentionally crosses the street to intercept someone and ask them for "50 cents". grr

what pisses me off is when they have some long BS story that they try to sell me when theres no way I'm gonna give them moeny anyways so now they just wasting me time. Fortunately I don't have to walk outside of campus much now, but there are bums literally sitting at the street corners at the edge of campus waiting to ambush you the second you get off campus and out of the campus cops jurisdiction.

The best stories you'll ever hear are the bums who walk around near train stations with bus/train schedules out. It's always fun to listen to why they need 2 extra dollars to get to somewhere to help their dying mother or some garbage.

I forgot this part. When my friend's girl was pwning him, he told her that to make up for it, the next nine bums that approach him for money will get nothing. His rationale was that he'll only have averaged $1/bum. The strangest part about the situation is my friend is a card carrying Republican; not typical behavior for a conservative.

My take on homeless guys and money: Asking for money gets nothing. Being entertaining may get a buck or two depending on how talented and entertaining (same as a street performer). Shoulder deep in a dumpter outside McDonalds and not asking for anything gets you $10 or $20.
