Should my comp run GTA3 this slow?

I have:
TBird 700
192 megs RAM
Geforce 2 MX400

I play GTA3 at 640x480 x 16bit color and it still lags and chops big time. Is that normal for a comp like mine? I know my computer is outdated, but does GTA3 demand THAT much?

Thanks!

It runs bad on my p3 866mhz laptop...with about those specs. 256MB of ram and a GeForce2Go (which is really a GeForce2MX..) so yea, its not going to run well at all.

yup
they are nothing but gf2mx's in disguise

maybe try overclocking your videocard a bit...more specifically ram, it might help a bit

are there any other settings you can turn off/low?

I'm not sure if that is how it should run. I saw GTA3 on a Intel 2.2GHz with a GF4MX and it did fine. (i'm not sure which GF4MX)

I can tell you this, it is likely your video card. Try turning down the draw ahead (or whatever GTA3 calls it).

GTA3 runs fantastic on my Intel P3 733MHz, Ti4200 64MB. (It sucked with my old TNT2 32MB)

"Direct Draw Ahead". I didn't see any option like this. There is Trails and Frame sinc, which I turned off.

I don't want to have to upgrade now because I am waiting for Doom3.

Tbird 1.4ghz, 256 ddr + gf3 gainward (290/600) and Live! - ran choppy under win98SE

same config but under XP runs great, no lag no nothing, 1024 x 768 x 32 no lag even when I have half the state police chasing me :>>> and I simply play the game for the carnage only 😉 (/me is sociopath)

Just upgrade. I mean you know doom 3 is gonna require a higher end graphics card. Just get a 9700, that should last you awhile.

I'm running an Athlon 2000 + a 9700pro.

GTA3 runs like constipated sh1t on a cold day.

so good or bad?

you are definetely going to have to upgrade if you want to play d3 let alone gta3. sell your whole system and buy a new one. no mx's tho. if you have an athlon xp 2000+ and a r9700 pro and gta3 chops, your system has a problem. 🙂)))))))))))

GTA3 doesn't run well on GF2 class video cards.

It ran rather good on MED detail, 1024x768 on my P3-866 with the GF3-Ti200 but MAKE SURE THERE IS NO FSAA!!! ITS ON BY DEFAULT.

A GF3 will help out the original poster's 700Mhz CPU... but the CPU will be keeping the GF3 from performing as well as it could.

If your mobo is a KT-133A chipset board, you can upgrade to an AMD XP1800+ cpu. Then drop in a $150 GF4-TI4200. You should get very good frame rate with that. if not, then there are some Windows issues.

If GTA3 is running very slow on a 2000mhz or AMD XP2000 with an ATI 9700 - then there are OTHER issues causing that!

Before you do *anything*, I would reccomend running defrag. GTA3 has to dynamically load crap from the HDD all the time, and my P4 1.7 and Radeon8500 lagged and chopped like mad before the defrag. Everything was peachy, afterwards.

Runs fine on my GF3@250/250 with an XP 1.46 GHz.

But I've seen some performance anomalies on other comps, I blame this on the fact that like many others, the GTA3 port is very badly done.
Oh well, better than the FF games at least 😉
