I just got an SMC Barricade router and I have a Toshiba docsis cable modem. All works fine, but I notice that my router and modem seem to constantly be "talking" to each other (lights flashing in unison). Is this normal?
Everyone's has been doing that lately. The current consensus is that all the cable providers are dealing with the "Code Red" virus/worm and is wreaking havoc on everything. May affect download speeds, but no real harm as long as you have a firewall.
Road Runner sent out email yesterday (at least in our area) indicating that Code Red was what was generating the traffic blinking the light when you didnt expect it to be blinking. Another article indicated that Code Red searched for prey with the same first and second TCPIP address values (first.second.x.x) instead of randomly. This would concentrate search traffic in infected subnets.
If your firewall is enabled all should be OK. To be sure... dont install IIS or uninstall it if you arent using it or down load the patch from Micro$oft and then you arent vulnerable. Code red infects IIS 4 and 5.
Well, get the patch on it soon, because on person testing it built an entire server from scratch without being connected to the net, and then in the 45 seconds once it connected that he used to download the patch, he got infected.
