Should my Assistant Director be deciplined for these actions?

Obviously I have no say in this but just wondering what you guys think.

He came in alittle over a year ago as our assistant director of IT and lead programmer. Within this time he has managed to hose his computer 4 times. The first 2 times he was installing some database extensions, so he says and corrupted the registry. The last 2 times he got infected with spyware and viruses and during all 4 incidents we had to reimage his machine.

I don't believe he was deciplined nor spoken to about these incidents by our current IT director. He's just way too lenient. I think if it was our previous director, he would be facing possible termination after the second or third incident.

If hes so technically competent, give him OS cds and let him have his way. That way he fixes what he f'd up

just get him a spare drive with a base image to throw into the machine and show him how to use ghost? That way you dont have to bother with his dumbass anymore.

If he's authorized to make those changes to his machine and needs to do so to fulfill his duties, I don't see a problem with it (though the spyware seems pretty fishy).

If not, well, then, you might have a case.

our VP of IT just got canned last week for pretty much doing nothing the year he was here other than watch tv on the slingbox he put in his office.

It's all about getting nailed at the interview, it's all smooth sailing from that point on. Nobody cares what you do and how you perform after that.

Or maybe it's his job to corrupt the registry and get spywares and viruses.

He's successfully creating an environment where it becomes hard to be productive, just like Wally in Dilbert. Why stop him? :p

I think his Internet access should be monitored and he should be canned for all of the porn surfing/warez downloading he is doing.

If you don't can him then he needs Admin access to do his job, so give him a Virtual machine and have him code on it. Then when he gets spyware you just undo changes to the VM.

Edit: I just wanted to add that if your IT group isn't keeping their Anti-Virus and OS Service Packs up to date then he should be given more leeway and your IT group should be raked over the coals.

deal with it? Sounds like its mainly work apps that is buggin his machine out, besides the spyware stuff, obviously. imaging takes no time at all too, unless you suck at it.

Being admonsished or punished is different at all levels. What he did at his level would get someone like you at your level fired. (If I am correct in thinking you are at the humble wage slave level.) You get spyware on your computer, you get fired.

What gets himself fired or disciplined? Well, gross neglect, mismanagement or missing goals set by those above him or HR. He is on a different playing field than you. I know, it sucks. But basically, he can do whatever he wants just as long as he meets his goals or requirements.

Now if IT spends way too much money, like cost overruns, fails to implement or finish projects, or people under him get out of hand -- then he gets fired.

EDIT: KB is right, too. If he ignores or breaks company policy (ethics), then he gets fired too. I doubt get spyware on your system is listed as unethical, but I bet porn surfing during work or on a company asset at any time is cause for disciplinary action.

Take away local admin rights, problem solved. Maybe when he has to go to you 100 times to have you make changes he will learn to not be a dipshit.
