Trying to figure out what components are defective. Have an Asus m2a-vm motherboard, amd x2 4950e cpu, and 2 sticks of Kingston value ram I bought and one of them is bad. I know my hard drive, psu, videocard, and monitor all work. If plug a videocard into the board alone should I get a post? If I then also install the ram should I get a post. How about the cpu without ram? I guess I am asking what is the minimum components needed to get a post. Thanks.

CPU, memory, video, and sometimes keyboard are required for a post.
If any of these are missing, no post and beep codes will be issued.

The PSU has to be hooked up (and supply adequate power) and there has to be a cooler on the CPU and the video card(s).

I don't know if a monitor is required, never had a reason to try that.

Thanks billb2...Guess I can't eliminate which components don't work since they all are needed to post. Time to RMA them all back to newegg...

You will get POST/beep codes (if you have a POST card, sometimes built in to boards, or a PC speaker hooked up - not multimedia speakers) if you have just motherboard, CPU and power supply hooked up. You won't actually finish a POST (see a picture on monitor) without memory, video card and monitor in addition.

No CPU = nothing.
