after closing three hundred-twenty some odd stores, should kmart fight to stay open for the sake of their employees? They just left 70,000 without a job...how do you feel about that?

It's a damn shame so many people will loose their jobs.. Unfortunate market conditions. Overall confidence is low so people are relunctant to spend. No simple solutions here.

I do not have all the numbers behind Kmart's current situation. But I think an economist would probably recommend that Kmart should go out of business.

Why does it matter? If the company can't afford to keep them open, they can't afford to keep them open.

That's what you get from a nation that buys into the bullsh!t that Wal-Mart sells.

On one hand, if a company cannot compete in an open market, it does not deserve to be propped up to remain in business (unless it serves a crucial infrastructure need, perhaps). On the other hand, Wal-Mart is EVIL.

This should give them incentive to find a better job. Unless you are one of their executives, working at Kmart has got to suck. I know every retail job I had when I was a teenager sucked.

There's a reason Wal Mart continues to grow while KMart is slowly dying...

Wal Mart likes to buy it's suppliers & or leverage prices form it's suppliers that other chains are unable to because of it's size/volume of sales.

Heard during a story that the UK limits grocery stores to less than 25% of a given market, and Wal Mart is approaching 26% with the possibility of the purchase of Safeway. I'd like to see a similar law in the U.S.

Survival of the fittest. If Kmart gets with the program and starts doing things right, they'll do better. They probably need to close their stores. If you've ever seen an OLD Kmart store, you'd understand why they need to be torn down. The employees may lose their jobs, but at least it keeps the corporation from going out of business and losing more money. The execs have to think about the shareholders.

There's an old saying...If you want 5 views on an economic situation, ask 4 economists for their opinions.

Lets see here, what type of country do we live in? A capitalist society. That means NO, we should not keep Kmart open. This country is not better off by keeping Kmart open when they just lose money.

It is a sad situation that they will lose their jobs but it is nothing worse than what I am going through. It is called reality. Those employees had their warning after the first round of store closings. If they were that worried, they should have found another job.

I think all the businesses in the world should just close and all governments should shut down, leaving only Walmart in existance. Then we can all become slave laborers to Walmart, oweing our soul to the company store.

K-Mart is trying to get out from under bankruptcy.
The bankruptcy court and K-Mart's creditors wouldn't allow them to keep unprofitable stores open.
Those employees had their warning after the first round of store closings. If they were that worried, they should have found another job.
Nailed it right on the head.

A business exists for the sole purpose of profit, Kmart is not there to be a charity.

Why does everyone hate walmart SOOOO much. They just took advantage of the opennings in front of them.

Do I hate to see local owned stores close because they can't compete with Walmart??? Hell yeah but that is the society we live in. The strongest competitor survives....

If you don't like it, move to China.

No. A company does not do business for the sake of its employees. Its in business to make money. K-Mart makes no money so it should go out of business.

No, because if a company is unwilling to do what's required for the general good of the company saving the jobs of those for now will mean the extinction of all jobs down the road.

And the company gets richer...better not expect them to keep prices low for your benefit.

Don't other stores sell the same bullsh!t at possibly higher prices?

No. The reason they are closing those stores is because they are unprofitable. The store they are closing here in Tulsa is a perfect example. It's rare that you go by there, which I do from time to time, and see more than 15-20 cars in the parking lot. The couple of times I have stopped in there, it's across the street from a wholesale tool store that I frequent, I have noticed that the store is dirty, poorly stocked, and not manned very well. It's in kind of a shady part of town and from what I've been told it has a very high theft rate. It's sad that those people are going to lose their jobs, but it's far better to close an unprofitable store than to keep it open and make the entire corporation suffer.

Great thinking there. Just assume no one can compete with Walmart so we need the government keeping Kmart alive. If Walmart decides to start overcharging for everything someone will enter the market and compete.
