dude, have you eaten a school cafeteria lately? It's not much better than when you were in school.

It is worse. At least when I grew up the cafeteria workers actually cooked the food. Now ever thing comes frozen. Basically now just a heat and serve operation.

My school food was awesome. Turkey day with mashed potatoes and corn, spaghetti and meatballs and taco boats even the pizza was good.

Ugh, I remembered their 'pizza'. The crust was dried up and tough as hell. Their 'cheese' lumped up together and had the texture of a half-dried playdough.

It was $1.60 or something back then for a slice ('97). Also came with equally atrocious side of salad.

At $1.60, it was the most expensive item in the cafeteria. You could spend the same and get a full tray of meal at other lines. They also never quite filled you up.

This is why Turkey Slop day was a god send.

I used to save lunch money for our pizza day in middle school

$0.25 for a 6x6" square of pizza, loaded with sauce and cheese melted all over. Sicilian style No meat but a milk and salad.

Two was a full meal; the third was bragging rights.

Man the stuffed crust pizza we had from middle to high school was awesome. The pizza itself, not so great but the crust was amazing. Well, for the time; in retrospect it was greasy and processed as hell but there was no denying I would have eaten multiple servings of the crust alone.

In elementary I always loved our "philadelphia cheese steak" day too. Real thin slices of "beef" with melted american cheese. Plus since nobody else seemed to like it, I always got to go first!

My favorite part about school lunches were the "cookies" in high school that were nothing but a flat glob of warm dough. It was essentially a liquid that you had to slurp off a piece of wax paper that turned perfectly transparent with all the grease. They were AWESOME.

I just miss the smell our cafeteria always had. Didn't matter what they were cooking that day. Always smelled the same.

For years, my lunches were usually a donut or cupcakes and soda. The good ol' days.

I remember when I first got to middle school (the school was 7-12) the food was actually pretty good. Awesome huge fresh pizza with tons of cheese and a great salad bar. Then there were some budget cuts or something and they had this outside vendor come in. The food was overall pretty shitty after that and didn't get better while I was still in school.

God we were such douchebags back then. I remember one kid tossed a bagel at a lunch lady's back when she wasn't looking. And later on when the food was shitty everyone boycotted the lunches for a few days or something. I don't remember what came of it, just that the lunch ladies looked kind of sad. It wasn't really their fault that the food sucked. I'm surprised they didn't poison us, high school kids really are a bunch of shits by and large.

Anybody had turkey slop? I wonder if this was a Massachusetts thing.

About once a month or so, our HS had this 'turkey slop'. It's basically turkey dark & white meat with creamy gravy. It comes with stuffing, corn, and rolls.

Everytime this meal is announced, we would have a FEAST. And the immediately classes after lunch would be a snoozefest.

hahaha in Texas it was called Turkey pot pie (but same thing) Holy crap we'd race to the cafeteria to get in line first when it was lunch time :D

EDIT: Oh man and the trapezoid shaped pizza too

My faves were the french bread pizzas (garlic breadsticks with cheese) and spaghetti.. looked like sloppy joes on top of noodles.. I used get two of those. The chicken fillet sandwiches were good too.

I would; loved a lot of that stuff, though I'm not sure it would still hold up now. We were just reminiscing about the awesome split chocolate eclairs filled with whipped cream. Greatest thing ever and only ever available at school for some reason. :hmm:

Part of the reason schools can offer cheap meals is because they have a fixed volume. Unlike restaurants who have to guess how much food to prep, and can end up wasting a lot.

Your idea COULD work, if you reserved your meal a month a head of time, and made a non-refundable payment.

That being said, my HS cafeteria was pretty good.

I doubt it would work. I've been a teacher for a long time. I've never heard of a school cafeteria that charges adults the same amount as students. We pay almost 2 1/2 times as much as the students for the exact same lunch.

And, with all the new guidelines, the lunches suck. The turkey/potatoes/gravy lunch with a roll & veggie used to be awesome. I saw one of those lunches today. The total volume of turkey was equal to about 2 of my fingers.

They have all you can eat for $5 where I work. Burgers, Fries, Hot Dogs, Grilled Cheese, Pizza, chocolate milk, Coke products, salad, and cookies are always on the menu with a bunch of other foods to choose from daily. It's not bad....but I don't eat there much because I'm always eating at home so I can let the dog out.
