Unfettered immigration would be very destructive to our economy. It has to be controlled, but that doesn't mean they can't raise the limits on the number of legal immigrants every year.

I'd say open the borders; let as many people that want to come here in.

However...

I'd also propose limiting welfare and other services to immigrants until they had lived here a certain amount of time. Maybe a couple of years. That might remove some of the incentive to move here and leech off of hard working Americans. I'm all for letting industrious or intelligent people moving to the US. Let the lazy bums stay in their own countries though.

Al Gore tougher on illegal immigration? Huh?

Here's where they both stand:

Al Gore: As a Member of Congress and Vice President, Al Gore has fought to maintain a forward-looking vision for immigration which maintains a strong, diverse immigrant population, prioritizes bringing families together, improves the quality of life of legal immigrants, and provides immigrant families with the tools necessary to fully participate in American life.

George W. Bush: Governor Bush believes that immigration is not a problem to be solved, but the sign of a successful nation. As Governor of a border state, he knows first-hand the benefits legal immigrants bring to America. While he is strongly opposed to illegal immigration, he believes more should be done to welcome legal immigrants. Therefore, he will establish a 6-month standard for processing immigration applications, encourage family reunification, and split the INS into two agencies: one focused on enforcement, and one focused on naturalization and immigration services.

I'm from Germany.
And even though I had a few years of English in school there, in no way does it prepare you to just pack your bags, fly over the big blue ocean and suddenly live 24/7 in an English speaking country. Of course the first things anybody wanted to teach me were swear words :p

I think that we should take all the people who are living in this country illegally (and boy are there alot of them), make sure that they learn to speak english or ship them out, and then make them citizens. why? well, if they aren't citizens, they're still going to live here. no one is going to ship them out. so why not make them citizens, so they can start paying taxes? i know, you may say they'll just mooch off of the socialist system. well, um, get rid of the social programs then, or something. i dunno.

Here's an idea: all illegal immigrants are given 5 years, then shot in the chest 5 times with a rifle. If they have earned enough money to buy a Kevlar vest, they can stay. If not, they probably weren't contributing anything anyway.

"When I lived in Colorado, they tried to pass a law that made Spanish the "official" language of Colorado. That meant that all public signs (road signs etc.) would have Spanish first and English second. A lot of people were very upset because they felt that it was America and English should remain the "official" language of the state"

Well if the American's don't want Spainish speaking regions in the US, well its was pretty stupid of them to invade parts of Mexico & then incorporate those parts (Texas, California & environs in between) in the US.

Anyway, seeing as the Puritains & other American settlers didn't bother learning the Native American lingos when they settled in Nth America, its a bit hypocritical for Americans to now demand immigrants learn English.
