Ok so here comes stupid question #2 for the day:

I found this cheap HD4850 at a local retailer in my country

(I'm going to post the translated page because I can't find this model anywhere on an international website - apparently the manufacturer isn't even making AMD/ATI cards anymore, they've gone gay for nVidia.)

http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcgarage.ro%2Fplaci-video%2Fforsa%2Fradeon-hd4850-vero-512mb-ddr3-256-bit%2F&sl=ro&tl=en

Reason I want to get this is because it's 15% cheaper than the next most expensive model, about the same price as a 9800GT (and I'm a gigantic cheap-ass)

So is this uh ... prudent? The thing isn't going to melt as soon as I plug it into the motherboard is it?

120$ for a 4850 is not that bad. Whats the next exspensive model?

^A HIS Radeon HD4850.

edit: Though it I buy that I might as well get the GTS250 which is like $5 more expensive...

Nope. Both have 512. But I'm more inclined toward the GTS because of the PhisX thing...
you likely wont be running games smoothly with graphics and hardware accelerated physx cranked up anyway on that card. what does the rest of your pc look like and what res are you playing at?

That's a good point. I guess if I turned on GPU phisx the card would perform below a HD4850..

The rest of the pc is an athlon II x3 440, 4 GB DDR3 1333 and a 1440*900 19" monitor. I guess the standard I'm applying to the GPU is that it should be able to run Crysis 1.2 on enthusiast settings with 4AA/4AF at around 20 FPS or at least bearable frame rates.

yeh if they are the same price I'd rather get the GTS 250 since it's not an EOLed product yet I assume support would be better. How much extra would a 5770 be where you are? Here I've seen them occaisonally to 130 - 140 so the extra money would be well worth it over a 250.

If there the same price go for the GTS 250, when I bought my 4850 512 going to a GTS 250 512 was like another 40$ CDN.

I paid 105$ CDN for my 4850 and the GTS 250 512mb was 145$ CDN.

That's the thing, the ATI is ~20 bucks cheaper compared to the GTS. An HD5770 would be at least $70 more than the GTS, and I'm already a bit over-budget...

Anyway, I can take a hint, the Forsa HD4850 model is a bad idea.😛 So I guess I'll go for the GTS250 after all.

I've never heard of Forsa, but that doesn't look like the reference cooler, so I'd imagine the temperature stays at a more sane level.

I don't know why you'd consider a GTS 250 if it's ~15% more expensive especially if they have the same amount of memory. They perform at basically the same level.

While I don't know the brand, I wouldn't think it would be any more likely to malfunction than any other brand.

It's up to you, but I'd go for the 4850.
