should I worry about bandwidth over my switch?

as a forward, I rent an apartment, so doing any kind of construction like properly running ethernet cables through the wall isn't an option.

my apartment has one cable drop-off, in the living room... as a result, I currently have my modem + router in my living room.

hard wired to the router are:

  • my Tivo (which I use to stream Netflix/Hulu)
  • a NAS array (which my desktop, laptop, and various tablets all connect to watch ripped DVD's, stream MP3's, etc)
  • and there's a 100' cable snaking around my apartment into my home office to connect my desktop (I work from home and felt like I had noticeable lag when trying to do it wirelessly)

(wirelessly connected are 2 laptops, 2 tablets, 2 cellphones, and my xbox 360 + PS3)

at the moment, everything is working fine and dandy... but I just bought a Tivo mini with the intention of hooking it up to the TV in my home office to watch live TV over. the mini requires a physical uplink, so I bought a gigabit switch figuring I could connect the 100' cable to that and split off cables to my desktop and the Tivo mini.

having that switch makes me tempted to move the NAS from the living room into the home office, though. it's got a super bright blue LED light that becomes distracting if the lights are off and we're trying to watch a movie, and the noise is also a bit annoying if someone is sitting next to it while it's running.

my concern is, would having the tivo unit, my desktop PC, and a NAS all running through the same switch potentially cause bandwidth issues? or am I being needlessly paranoid?

To clarify, thats a Switch, not a Hub. They're different devices and not interchangeable terms. The good news is that a Switch is a whole lot better than a Hub :)

For your use case, your fine plugging it all into whichever.

**Edited**

I was thinking the OP mentioned a hub somewhere in his post and couldn't find it. Nevermind...
