Should I wait to build new pc?

Hi,
Can I have your opinion on whether I should wait a few months to build a new pc? I know there is always new stuff right around the corner, but I don't want to build one right before something great comes out. Right now my current pc (intel x6800, nvidia 8800 gtx, 2GB ram) is suffice, but I want to build a new system. I mainly do regular computer stuff and I play Call of Duty 4. Thanks for input.

only "big" thing coming out soon AFAIK is the P45 chipset and that might not be any use of you if you game a lot. After that you have the Nehalem platform next year and that will change everything. If you need to upgrade and can't wait til Q1 2009 just go for it now.

Personally I am waiting for the P45 chipset since I can wait another month and I will be using a 45nm Quad core.

if you have a x6800, you should just overclock it. you should be able to get close to 4ghz, which is almost as good as any dual core today. if you want quad core though, that's another story, but i don't see you benefiting from quad core.

wait for a bit, your x6800 dual core + 8800gtx is no slouch. the only thing your system probably cant really handle (at max settings) is crysis, but apart from crysis, it should run everything else really well.

As others have mentioned your system is alreday capable of giving you 80-90% of the top-end performance if you overclock and don't spend another dime.

If you were looking for something to upgrade then I'd recommend you consider putting an SSD under the hood and improve your overall system responsiveness.

I haven't used an SSD, but I have used two 4GB I-RAM drives in raid-0 for over a year and I can tell you there is a night and day difference in a system that has sub-millisecond latencies versus a system shackled with double-digit millisecond latencies. I'll be replacing my i-ram setup with an SSD as soon as I migrate to Vista (my XP install fits on my iram drives thanks to nLite).
