Should I wait for Skylake laptops?

Hello everyone,

I'm currently in the market to buy a new laptop. I'm very interested in the HP Spectre x360 and that goes for around $1150. I am actually very tempted to buy it today due to the specs it has and how i can get a student discount from Microsoft. But the problem I am having is that I know the new Skylake laptops could be released anytime this month or next month or maybe further back if they get pushed back. I know they're going to be faster and more effecient that the broadwell so is it worth it to just wait it out to get one of the Skylakes for a similar price which will most likely be faster? I really don't want to wait to be honest and I do attend college and kind of need one asap. For the laptop I don't plan on gaming or anything I just need one for general use and to do some programming projects on for a few of my classes as well as browse the web and stream videos.

Also, does anyone have a general idea of when these new laptops will even come out?

Thanks for any responses

I think the Broadwell i5-5200 will be able to do everything you want. Even an i5-5200 and $1150 is probably overkill for what you need. i5-6200 Skylake might offer a tiny gain in performance and supports DX12 and come with Windows 10 out-of-the-box but otherwise will probably feel about the same.

CPU specs for each according to Intel:

The benefits of Skylake over Broadwell are quite small especially when you consider the fact that they are both 14nm. And it looks like it's going to be a long wait for 10nm so if you need a new laptop now I'd go for it.

I was in the same position, not sure whether to wait for Skylake or drop some $$$ on a Broadwell system. I'm glad I went ahead with the latter as the jump to Skylake isn't great enough to justify the wait.

I ordered my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga in early September and received it two days ago, and I am loving it right away. Intel Core i5 5300U, 8GB RAM, 16GB SSD/500GB HDD, 1080p Screen with Touch/Stylus, all in a tiny convertible form factor. Win, win, win.

The new Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 260 was announced that IFA but won't be available for several more months.

The best technology is what you can buy today, the only time I would wait if it is a must have or if the go live is less than a week's time off.

Creed3020, do you by any chance use an Adonis Jot stylus? Been looking at the Jot Dash or Jot Script 2 ones.

If I were you I wouldn't get anything but a Skylake computer right now. Not only for the CPU itself but also for the new motherboards that these laptops/desktops have which support Skylake, they are better in overall.

The problem with waiting for the next gen CPU in laptops, is you don't know when the first ones are going to hit, you don't know which CPUs will be out first, and you don't know what make/model will be out first and you don't know the price. None of these are generally problems with desktop CPUs.

If you're waiting for something like the Spectre x360 or XPS 13 or Zenbook 13, it might be out with the first Skylake laptops within a month, or it could be Christmas or even spring-time before something lands that you really like. Last thing you probably want to do is grab the first skylake laptop with a mechanical HD and 14" TN panel...
