Should I wait for KT333/KT333A?

Hello All!

I'm looking to upgrade my current PII 350. I've been doing a lot of research and decided to build an AMD XP based system.

Based on my findings and needs, I was thinking on putting together a XP 1700+ with a Shuttle AK35GTR.

My 1st questions is, based on all the talk about KT333/A; should I wait? How soon do you think that KT333/A based MBs will be available for sale?

Thanks for your input!

first of all, welcome to Anandtech.

Your choices are very nice, you can't go wrong with that. as for the KT333/A the performance increase will be minimal over a KT266/A. I have an A7V with a 1.3 TBird so I can stand to wait so more, on the other hand you have a PII 350 which will cripple you plaing 3Dgames or multimedia apps. In my opinion the %5 increase in performance waiting for the KT333/A over the KT266/A is not worth it.

It's up to you. KT333 has been canceled and KT333A is coming much sooner than expected (like prolly mid-late March) so it's your call. Personally, KT333A is nothing to get totally excited about. It will feature On-Chip USB 2.0, ATA/133, and I think I may have heard Firewire mentioned as well, but all those features can be had on current KT266A boards (AK35 GTR has ATA/133 RAID, MSi K7T266 Pro2-RU has USB 2.0, and some board's gotta have firewire) so you make the call. I wouldn't wait though.

Today, ocworkbench declared that to be a rumor and reported KT333 boards should start showing up within 2 weeks. While I agree that there's not much, if anything, to be gained over KT266A performance-wise (at this time), most KT333 boards will provide more integrated features that will be useful (sooner or later) - so I would say it's definitely worth waitng another 2 weeks for the KT333 boards!

Depends on how much bang-for-the-buck versus budget that AJF70 has, if he's going to OC, etc. IMO the 1.4 P3 is not worth the money. For that cash, you can get a 1.8A P4 CPU and motherboard, and still have cash left over.

And, no, I don't hate P3 CPUs, I just feel that they aren't good values right now. Just last month I got a Tualatin Celeron 1.0A and a Coppermine P3 1000. Both overclocks to 1333, but the Celeron runs nice and cool while the P3 is one hot bi@tch.

Hehe, yeah good one.. course the new Celeron's are made on the .13 micron wafers while the CuMine P3 1GHz was made on a .18 micron wafer, which is why the Celery runs cooler. Please I havent touched a celeron since they were in slot form and back then it was worth the "Bang for your Buck" with infinite overclocking potential. Well maybe some of us don't like change. The Pentium 3 didnt get the justice it deserved. Sure AMD has it on some ends, but the P3 happens to be the best CPU (and intel's most popular), so I think the P3 deserves another try. Its not about value.. its about keeping those AMD loving guys keeping their mouth quiet saying stuff bout intel. The P3 1.4GHz can blow away the Athlon 1.4... (i just have to find a website to back it up, but no one seems to care anymore) So there you have it.... I dont know exactly what it is.

I'm sure that will be one credible site - like www.intel.com. :p

And the funny thing is... the Intel website practically doesnot know of the Tualitan Pentium 3's existance. I mean talk about an unwanted child... sheesh..at least tell people about it.
