What is your intended use for this? Those specs are pretty high for a laptop... personally, I'd go with a Centrino setup.

have you considered Sager notebooks?

Link

most of their systems now have 800mhz FSB

im not sure how much for the acer or how much you want to spend, but they might have what you are looking for

It'll be used for a 3D gaming LAN machine upstairs and where I can take it to my mates and play games like Ghost recon UT2003. It won't be used for travelling i.e. business use so I wouldn't even think of a centrino chip @ 1.7Ghz. I currently have a toshiba 1Ghz and to step up to a 1.7Ghz would be a complete waste.

Shuttle SFF pc and an LCD.

You'll always be dissapointed with laptops for this because of their lame duck HDDs. They just feel like 486s when you actually use them. They're.....pokey.

WOW! those Sager machines are awsome but I've never heard of them, I'm from Australia and our prices are more expensive than yours. I got quoted with all 3 options USD$2,865.00 which may be alot to you but the centrino notebooks are that & more.

Those Sager NP8790-S & the NP8790-V are wicked.

There's one thing you don't seem to be considering though... a 1.7 Ghz Pentium M is MUCH faster than a 1.7 Ghz Pentium 4.

yup, i think you have the idea that a centrino 1.7 = P4 1.7. if i had to guess right now without looking at any sort of benchies, i would day a centrino 1.7 would be equal to something like 2.4B-2.53B

Sager makes one hell of a laptop. Read the reviews on both their laptops and their customer service. You would certainly be one happy camper if you got one of those. :)

The laptop he's looking at has a 120GB 7200rpm HDD

My Inspiron's HD is a 5400. While it's a bit slower than a desktop, it really doesn't matter when you're playing games and such. I've never had it slow me down. Doesn't feel anything like a 486.
