should i use the in-camera barrel distortion correction or photoshop?

how often do you guys shoot in the 'effects' modes?

I use the in-camera distortion correction. One less thing to do in post, and Nikon cameras do a wonderful job with modern lenses.

With the 5100, I could see using both the miniature and the selective color effects. I have used some of these on the Canon S95 P&S.

Depends. I'd do it in post because I shoot raw, and I always want my raw data as unedited as possible.
