ill be getting my new system soon, and i need to know which components to use, since i still have a lot of left overs from my old system. the new system will have an intel 845PE chipset, which includes the AC97 decoder. im assuming i can use this with my creative cambridge soundworks FPS 2000 digital. which would be better? to keep using the audigy and disable the onboard sound or just use the onboard sound and sell the soundcard?

Use the Creative card. It will do more work for the CPU than the onboard sound therefore improving the performance of your new machine.

In my experience, onboard AC97 sound is good for letting windows go "Ding" or "bunk" when something goes wrong, and maybe playing MP3's, but not much more. Of course, your Audigy is made by Creative, so that's not good either...😉 j/k

AC97 is the codec standard,
Audigy is also AC97.

you're comparing Audigy (a real DSP with built-in AC97 codec) to ICH4's sound engine which is powered by the cpu plus a 3rd party AC97 codec.

Yep! I too would use the Audigy, unless you need to use all the PCI slots for something else.
