I am really sick right now, got the runny nose, the congestion, the sore throat, was looking for medicine in my dorm room and found TavisT-D Allergy/Sinus/Headache, but when i saw the epiration date it was 12/02 ........ 1 month expired, is it smart to take it or not?

A month shouldn't matter much.

Six months or more, I would say "no". Expiration dates are there for a reason. I heard someplace that the chemical compound of the medicine actually changes.

This is actually true. You should never take expired asprin, for example, because it slowly breaks down in to an acid that can be very harmful. However with most medications it simply becomes less effective over time.

One month probably won't matter but the choice is yours.

<edit> crap! parhaps I was wrong.

Gawd what a bunch of pansies!!!

Just take it.

I work for a pharmaceutical manufacturer. The Expiry date is there mostly because that is the date where the efficacy falls below the acceptable levels published by the FDA. This level is usually 90-95% of dosage strength and can be as low as 85%.

It also depends on the conditions which it was stored. Temperature and humidity. These affect the strength of the drug.

I've had medicines expire, and called my pharmacist. Basically, Amish is right on. It just losed its effectiveness, it doesn't become cianide or anything. Just take it, and realize that its only 85% effective, and not at 95-100% strength.

i discover new drugs at a major pharmaceutical company, so i feel somewhat qualified to say this. over-the-counter drugs will never be bad one month after expiration date. drugs are not going to be stable right up until expiration date, and then all of a sudden degrade after that date. pharmaceutical companies will set a date with enough cushion to protect themselves against possible lawsuits etc., because even if one bottle out of millions manufactured expire on or before the expiration date, the reputation will forever be tarnished. i would pay closer attention with expiration dates of liquid medicines, especially with insulin and the like. storage of medicine will play a big role, don't ever expose the bottles to sunlight (or any other UV source).

Does morphine have an expiration time? I'm just curious. Really, I am. This is for a research paper I'm writing.
