i discover new drugs at a major pharmaceutical company, so i feel somewhat qualified to say this. over-the-counter drugs will never be bad one month after expiration date. drugs are not going to be stable right up until expiration date, and then all of a sudden degrade after that date. pharmaceutical companies will set a date with enough cushion to protect themselves against possible lawsuits etc., because even if one bottle out of millions manufactured expire on or before the expiration date, the reputation will forever be tarnished. i would pay closer attention with expiration dates of liquid medicines, especially with insulin and the like. storage of medicine will play a big role, don't ever expose the bottles to sunlight (or any other UV source).
