The truth is that it barely makes any difference. The only argument for using DVD+R would be if you have one of the very few old set-top players that doesn't play anything but DVD-ROM booktype.
I would look up your burner on CDRLabs.com and check what media it likes the best, but in general most burners get slightly better burn quality with -R media, which compounds with the fact that set-top players like -R media a little better, so you're usually better off using DVD-R.
Your'e always better off with quality media. Taiyo Yuden DVD+R is almost always going to give you much better results than generic Chinese DVD-R (*edit* and vice versa ... my point is that the quality of media is more imporant than the difference between -R and +R). If you're choosing between Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R, it's going to be hard to find a situation where they won't both give you good results. For movies, though, there are many older players that don't like +R, and there are some that don't like -R but will play bookset +R. DVD-R has simply been around longer and is more compatible.
DVD+R is newer. Because it's newer it's a little less compatible with older players, but it also has a few more features (like booksetting). That's why there's so much debate. I go with Taiyo Yuden DVD-R because it gets the best burn quality with my buner and is compatible with everything I've ever tried. The same logic could justify using DVD+R for other people.
When it comes to RW media, I think some of the features of DVD+RW make it superior to DVD-RW, though.
