With the new AMD cards coming close I'm planning on getting a gtx 980 or a r9 390x.
Is it worth it to upgrade from a fx8350 to a i5 4690k?
 
That's a complete system upgrade you're considering, not just dropping in a new CPU. I'd say get the new video card, try it out with your existing setup. If fast enough, you're done. If not, wait for Skylake as mentioned above.
