Should I Upgrade?

So help me decide. I have a 4670k running a 470 GTX that is getting long in the tooth. I Reaallllly am excited about Elder Scrolls Online and Star Citizen and possibly Oculus Rift VR on the horizon. I have about $300 to spend on a video card and am a huge Nvidia guy (read, wont buy AMD, sorry folks, no disrespect). Should I buy now and get a 770? OR, should I try to hold out until the 8 series cards come along.... I'm concerned about the 770 having enough horsepower for Star Citizen and the Oculus Rift.....

Thanks in advance!

I would wait, I feel like now is a terrible time to buy. Hang on to that 470 until the games you want come out and then see what you can buy for your money.

ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD approx $390 CDN. This card doesn't even come close to the AMD R9 290 MSRP's at $399.

EVGA 04G-P4-3776-KR GeForce GTX 770 4GB approx $526 CDN - Presently for this money I would look into an R9 290.

nVida is great for 1080p Gaming but if you step up to 1440p and use Mantle specific games like Star Citizen you're better off with a 384-Bit/3GB GPU and go with something like the R9 280X for approx $455 CDN (Granted this card is over priced due to Mining).

Don't think nVidia Retailers are not taking advantage of the AMD Mining Craze and jacking prices.

NOTE: Americans can usually obtain Graphic Cards for $80 less then Canadians: Exception, I bought a Gigabyte R9 290X at inception for $539 CDN where the R9 290 MSRP's at $399 CDN - I wish I had bought several of them back in November and the R9 280X was below $300.

760 2GB for around $200 is a great buy. Other than that, if you can't get a deal on a 760, there aren't many cards I would recommend at the moment with the insane prices.

I'd also recommend waiting for Maxwell, but it's most likely gonna be at least another 3-6 months.

You should upgrade to an R9 290X. :awe:

Seriously though, I'd wait. This generation is pretty long in the tooth itself- the first 28nm cards came out over 2 years ago! Wait until the top end GPUs move to 20nm (or 16nm, if they skip 20nm).

PNY 770 2gb is on amazon for $309 today. prime eligible. and you're trying to compare it to a 290 r9 that the cheapest I can find on amazon is $599. (NO JOKE).

Why do AMD guys always try to upsale? Of course its faster, and twice the price. I dont feel a need for 4gb of memory in 1080p gaming, lots of reviews have proven its pretty useless at 1080p resolutions. also, Like i said, there is no love for AMD in my heart after some of the experiences i've had. I've vowed to never give them another penny, and I'm serious about it.

Still laughing over z15cam comparing the most expensive possible 770 to the cheapest available AMD. Seriously, killing me here. :D

Ignore anyone who chose to ignore something very specific in your OP...

I'd say wait. Unless you are already playing a game that needs an upgrade, waiting is the best option. I only upgraded to my 770 because my 460 wasn't cutting it in BF4.

$309 is a decent price right now, but the 770s have gone lower in the past. I got my card for $319 after $10 rebate, but that was back in November. Just shows how prices have stagnated. But I guess that will happen when there is no pressure from the competition...

Ain't it the truth! Considering NAFTA.

Stay at 1080P res he's fine with a GTX 770 2GB: BUT in the future he's a dead end @ 1440p where as a R9 280X will launch him for $80 more.

z15: seriously, I'm very happy with 1080p and have no plans to replace my sweet monitor any time soon. Also, can't find a 280X for less than $450 right now, $140 more than the price of the 770.

I have decided to wait for maxwell though. Thanks for everyones input (even z15). Very much appreciated.

Star Citizen is 2015+

And ESO might dissapoint you. Also it doesnt seem to be that demanding.

In short, wait.

@shintaiDK: I've really enjoyed the ESO beta thus far and have already pre-ordered the collectors edition. You are right about the "not that demanding" part at least so far, I just worry about massive PvP fights. On the topic of star citizen, the full persistent universe is 2015, but dog fighting is only months away (maybe sooner?).

I do agree on the wait part though. I've been convinced. Probably save a few extra bucks by then as well.

If your 470 can handle ESO then stick with it, I won't be upgrading off my card for Star Citizen until more of the game gets released and performance gets optimized. Prices are kinda meh right now to me as well.

This

GPU (or any PC hardware) losses it's value/performance SO fast......

Let the games come out, and make sure you actually like them and will be playing them. At that point you will also have a better idea which cards suit the game best.

Patience is the key to success.

CPU/RAM is an exception to that rule IMO. A 3 year old 2500k CPU is still hovering around $150+ used while RAM prices are constantly fluctuating up and down and hardly depreciating.

I could actually make a profit if I chose to sell my 2x4GB set of G.Skill Ripjaws DDR 2133 RAM.
