Ok, I currently have 256+128 MB PC133 RAM in my comptuer, with a 1 GB page file on its own partition, running windows XP pro.

I only have two slots, question is for $20 should I buy a new 256 MB PC133 SDRAM and replace the 128 MB chip? Is it worth 20 bucks and will I even notice any difference?

Thanks!

My first guess is no. But... You might wanna do some investigating first. I used to have only 256ddr and I noticed with photoshop and dreamweaver and winamp, and 5 ims, and a few IE's open I was going over my 256mb limit. I decided to go out and invest in 2 512mb dimms and I sold the 256 stick so now i'm up to 1GB. Other than the time I opened a file that was a script that opened about 600 copies of itself on my computer and ate 700mb of ram, I've never benefitted from the 1GB.

Try pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and click on the performance tab. Watch how much ram you are using. If you are up in the 4 or 500mb range then maybe it would be worth getting the extra 128mb. You might however think about upgrading the entire comptuer at this point. You may check into getting a faster hard drive maybe a 7200RPM 8MB cache is you are currently running a 5400RPM, make a nice difference. Hope this was of some help to you, good luck.

it says that i've got 225 MB free physical ram... does this mean the extra 128 MB is pointless?

thanks for the help!

just look at the mem usage box, see how much you're using and subtract from what you have.. if that number is always positive, no upgrade needed.

I voted no, because I would not use $20 for 128mb and then have one useless stick of memory. Unless you can use the lonely stick in another machine or sell it...

forget it man, SDR is like dead in the water these day. invest in DDR, i can get pc2700 256mb for 24 buck shipped LOL and it runs at 333 FSB, wow! but I can only utilize 266 FSB since duron can't handle anything faster then that or it will just BSOD.

Well, DDR would not be compatible with my machine- i have an old celeron L400C intel 810 chipset motherboard with an upgraded processor; i think it only takes SDRAM. or am i mistaken?

Dell dimension L series.

I vote no... don't spend money on an outdated system. Wait till you're ready to upgrade to something newer that supports DDR.
