Should I upgrade to Sandy Bridge?

Looking at the reviews for the new Sandy Bridge Processors got me thinking about upgrading but I don't know if I should.

I use my PC mainly for Gaming, Music and Video conversion and DVD and Blue Ray ripping.

My current rig:
Case: Azza Solano 1000
PSU: CoolerMaster SilentPro 800w Gold
MB: Asus P7P55D-E Pro
Memory: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws 1600
CPU: Intel i7 870 2.93 Ghz
CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper TX3
Boot Drive: Intel X25M 120GB SSD
Gaming Drive: 300GB Velociraptor
Video Card: MSI Hawk Talon 460GTX 810mhz
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit

Can this PC last me another two years for what I use it for or should I seriously consider investing in a new Sandy Bridge PC?

Any feedback would be appreciated thanks guys.
 
Yes that is garbage upgrade immediately.
And PM me -- I have an interest in obsolete tech, so I'll take that off your hands for the price of shipping.

You have a mid-range to upper mid-range system right now. What problem do you have with it that you want to spend money to upgrade?

No, don't you know that when a new CPU comes out Intel puts all their old CPUs into a limp-mode and performance magically starts to lessen? BTW don't listen to DominionSeraph. He merely has interest in old tech. I, on the other hand, will actually recycle it. So send it to me for recycling after you upgrade. I will even waive my usual waste disposal fee, just for you. :colbert:
 
Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah the itch of a new build is there whenever something new comes along the way but my PC is running just fine for what I use it for I can wait a couple a months before jumping onto Sandy Bridge.
 
If you have the money to burn and want to upgrade in order to have the latest and greatest, then by all means do so as it helps the economy. On the other hand, from a practical perspective you should really look at what you have to gain by doing so, and upgrade if that gain is worth it to you.
 
The performance difference would actually be quite significant if he was unable to overclock the 1156 platform for whatever reason, but could overclock SB (should be even easier).

You know, as opposed to Dom and Zap, I'd actually put up $200 for that comp + shipping. I'd like to put it in my museum, to play games.
 
Unlike all these other jokers, I would put it to use at my non-profit soup kitchen for cats. So, if you were to ship it to me, you would know that it would go towards the good cause of calculating how much delicious soup to serve to tabbies and the like.

Oh, and endlessmike, I think I speak for David, DominionSeraph and Zap when I say that we are all being facetious. If you are looking for a new system, there is a For Sale/Trade forum.

OP, being serious now, as others have also said, if the system is working just fine, then no need to mess with things. The itch to upgrade is hard to resist, but as it stands that system looks just fine.

true. For one thing, I don't have $200 laying around right now to spend, but another thing is $200 is definitely a horrendously low price. You still have a wonderful system. Yes, it's "outdated", but that does not mean it's time to buy a new rig.
 
Is Sandy Bridge faster than what you have? Yes, by about 20%.
Is 20% worth $500? Only you can answer that.

Outdated? Hardly. Is there a newer platform out? Yes, but his rig is definitely NOT outdated. It should be able to play any game, run any program he so chooses with no problems.

Will the Sandy Bridge platform offer a bit more "oomph?" Of course...but only he can decide whether that 15%-20% increase and bragging rights are worth the cost of the upgrade.
 
If it feels good, do it!

I would wait and see if some other motherboards are availabe or if the new motherboards have problems. This is a new chipset and you dont know what kind of problems will show up.

Let someone else do the beta testing.

Usually the first motherboards that come out are way overpriced.
