the engineer's maxim doesn't necessarily apply to software. sometimes you want features that old stuff doesn't have. dos was pretty damned stable (for me) but i prefer win2k.

and as nice as opera is, i find it doesn't render pages as nicely as ie does, with css, xml, and all.

You get print preview, but i can't think of anything else. I upgraded. There were no problems, and it might just run a tad more quickly, so why not?

I think 5.5 comes with a bunch of developer tools. If you don't need all that extra stuff, just stick with 5.0 or whatever.

Mine does. Of course I could be wrong since I only have it on three machines.

They are mostly developer-oriented.

i.e.:
Enhanced visual filters (the DirectX transform thingies)
You can change colours of the scroll bars (oooh! big deal :))
More enhanced HTML editing features (i.e. my text editor)
I believe that it added a few more CSS attributes also
Print Preview (already mentioned)
It handles CSS and DHTML slightly differently (more headaches for me) - feature of bug? :)

Nothing major, as far as the end-user is concerned. Even the XML parser that ships with IE 5.5 is the same version (or maybe 0.1 version ahead) than IE 5.0.
