Should I upgrade or not?

Hi all, 'tis my first thread on this forum so excuse me if I'm violating some unofficial forum law ():).
Back to the topic, I feel that my rig is getting a bit sluggish for my current needs and I was considering upgrading. My needs are (in order of importance) : Gaming>Media-editing>CAD. So basically I need a quad-core. And I'm in a dilemma on what socket I should be choosing . What I need is a socket which has upgradability(is that a word?), this means that the mobo MUST last at least 2 CPUs. And I have no idea where AM3, LGA1336 and LGA1156 stand future-wise/upgrade-wise , that's where I need your help. What should I do? I'm in France so I've got an equivalent budget of around 350$ 'cuz things are really expensive in France 'cuz of import tax and other crap.

Here's my current rig:

Case: CM-690
Mobo : GA-EP45-UD3P
CPU : e8400 @ 3.6GHz (I don't want to go higher)
HSF : HDT-S1283
RAM : 2x2GB DDR2 800MHz
GPU : 4870 1GB Vapor-X
PSU : 600W StealthXStream

Based on your budget & the fact you have a really good mobo for OCing, why not just get a s775 quad?

Q9550/Q9650 should get you 3.6+ GHz easily provided you have a half decent cooler.

For gaming: better video card.

I'd say start saving the $$$ for a new platform later, as your current budget doesn't really allow for a worthy upgrade, especially considering your current system is just fine (just need better CPU/GPU from the sounds of it).

Have you found out if existing LGA1366 mainboards will accept Sandy Bridge?

welcome to the forum, I also concur with n7's evaluation of your situation. You current rig should be sufficient for most light gaming and even CAD.

right now Nvidia is coming with their DX11 graphics card next few months so that might shake up the prices, it's best to wait for the graphics card upgrade another few months at least. so do the cpu upgrade first, get a Q9550 new or used couple that with a good cooler like hyper 212+ and you can do 3,6Ghz with your current board. at this speed it should be plenty fast. save the rest for a future gcard upgrade probably should be a good DX11 card when you ready.
