Should I upgrade my (year 2009) QuadCore Athlon II X4 635 ?

GoodEnough

My CPU is QuadCore Athlon II X4 635
I think it's from 2009.
My Win7 SSD desktop is still fast as $#%#%@$#

If I wanted to upgrade this CPU just for kicks, what would be a best value upgrade (price/performance) that is a direct swap on the same MB ?

Again, NOT the latest bleeding edge from 2014.
But something from like 2011 or 2012 that is cheap,
but a worthwhile upgrade from the QuadCore Athlon II X4 635

Nothing from AMD is a worthwhile upgrade

I mean bulldozer got bulldozed by Phenom II

I disagree. Piledriver makes a lot of sense as a low-cost upgrade for those with boards that will support it.

@OP, my recommendation is to find out if an FX-6300 will work.

Can you guys post a link to what I should buy?
Also, what sort of "mounting format" is my current chip?
What's the right word? So, I know the replacement CPU will fit onto the same MB.

Looked it up, your board is AM3 (not AM3+) and won't support AMD's new FX CPUs AFAIK.

The strongest processor you can place into Inspiron 570 is Phenom II x4 965 BE, at least 3 or 4 forum members have it installed, me included. FX series is new family of CPU and would not be recognized by Inspiron BIOS, I wish it could be done! If you are interested placing 965 BE let us know, as it will involve cooling upgrades, well look into my signature, you see...

^ I think a 965 would be a reasonable upgrade for you. It's not a modern CPU, but it'll extend the life of what you have.

Just based on PassMark, you could expect a 1/3 increase in performance from that upgrade.

Phenom X4 965BE scores 4273 vs the Athlon X4 635 @ 3274

The X4 965BE is about equivalent (in this test) to an i3-3220 (Ivy Bridge), just below the original "Core i" series i7-870. That's actually not bad at all.

Cooling upgrades? What's that about? New coolant and radiator?
What else would I need to replace besides just popping in a new CPU?
Looks like CPU and fan would run me $150. Not sure it's really worth it.

If you don't have any current performance issues I don't see the point in upgrading. Especially from Athlon X4 to Phenom X4

A 1/3 speed increase benchmarks nice, but it's barely noticeable in real world use.

Outside of specific tasks where you're CPU limited.

I'd spend the money on a fancy keyboard, nicer monitor, or a couple books.

Just a FYI, but you may find affordable Phenom II x4s difficult to find. The used AM3 CPU market is somewhat inflated.

Going to the Phenom would be alright, but not really worth it. Better off spending the money on a graphics card upgrade, if you want it to play games.

unless you're into PC gaming, I see no reasons to upgrade from Athlon II X4 to Phenom II X4 just for productivity apps.

I don't play games, so I guess upgrading is pointless.
I figured if it was dirt cheap, I'd do it.
Doesn't seem like the case,
and I'll stick with this 2009 CPU.
My PC already works great for my needs
Thanks for the objective advice.

Chances are it's AM2 so there isn't many choices.

Otherwise yes a Phenom II X4 965 or so or a X6 1055T or higher.

Somewhere, someone may be selling a decent Phenom II x4 for under $80, which is the price point where it would start to look mighty tasty for a guy in your position. However, I'm not seeing it (believe me, I've looked). Most of the Denebs I see are going for $100+.
