Should I upgrade my vid. card?

Now I know most people's answer to this is going to be 'Hell, yes!' but a few things to note:
I don't care about AA, AF, or playing at high resolutions (800x600 has been a long favorite of mine.) I just like max details within the game settings and the highest frame rates possible.

I know I have enough memory for my current system, which I'm actually quite happy with; my processor speed is very decent, I think, my HD has been as stable as a rock - but I actually (sounds dorky, I know) got my tax return back, finally, and was thinking of upgrading what I think is probably the most outdated component on my system.
But when a friend (who has the same gaming tastes as me basically) upgraded to an FX5700 she saw no difference whatsoever EXCEPT in benchmarks, which neither of us don't care much about. She knew that if she raised the resolution on certain games the FX5700 would have taken a much lesser hit than her previous Ti500 but keeping everything at her current settings, she didn't see any noticeable increase in the frame rates of the games themselves - she actually made notes of what the frames were at different points in each of her games, saving them, and then returning to the same point after the upgrade. I was there to witness some of her tests and I saw that there had been no real difference (she also has decent specs: P4. 2.8 HT, 512 DDR, 80GB HD 7200rpm)
I'm also leery because the only games that I would like to see a performance improvement in are said to be CPU-intensive, like Morrowind, and Mafia (especially when driving in the city at night). It seems most games are CPU-intensive so is it really worth the money to upgrade just the vid. card if the system is decent overall and the vid. card is not crap? I was thinking maybe, an FX 5900?

ATI fans: I would consider them, but I had a host of problems with a bunch of games when trying out a 9600 - I would list them, but this post is long enough as it is.

For those who don't remember (not trying to be sarcastic, it HAS been awhile) the TI200 was actually a pretty well-regarded card (and I read somewhere that it actually outperformed some versions of the FX5600 chipset, I know it definitely wiped the floor with the 5200)

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Playing at 800x600 without using aa/af using a "modern" graphics card most games will be cpu limited. So if you must stick to 800x600 then I would stick with what you have until you start noticing slowdowns.

no point if yu are going to run 800x600 with no AA/AF weirdo. haha J/k I would think a CPU upgrade would help more if you are running at those specs.

DEPENDS on what resolution they run at. My Geforce3 can run everything throwed at it on 800x600. If resolution doesnt matter and it doesnt matter if you're using high or low detail settings then really dissagreee with you. If its the opposite. then i agree with ya :p

I agree totally

i just meant if he did buy one (regardless of what resoulutions used) than buy that...so in future it will do the same for a while

As a weirdo I'm not against high resolutions, just rather have high frame rates, but let's say I was to get something like the 9800 Pro or the FX5950 and raise the resolutions a bit, say 1280x1024 - is there a chance that the frames at that res. would be higher than at 800x600 with a Ti200?
Incidentally, accept my apologies if that's a stupid question...

Edit:On the same card, the framerate will be equal at best, but if you upgrade the card, the framerate will likely be higher, even if you crank up the resolution.

That's an enourmous resolution boost.

800x600 = 480,000 pixels

1280x1024 = 1,310,720 pixels or roughly three times as many.

You might go from 8x6 to 10x7 and still see some frame rate increase though.

I haven't gamed at 800x600 since...well at least 5 years ago. Mainly, because I like how much better things look at higher res.

What I would suggest is this: If you upgrade, do it to a nice last-gen card. A 9700 Pro, 9800 Pro, FX 5900, something like that. It will allow you to play at 1024x768 (with inc framerate from where you are now) and let you play most things at 1280x1024. I have been using my 9700 Pro to play games at 1280x1024 WITH AA/AF for pretty much the whole 2 years I've had it. City of Heros is the only game I've had to temper down my settings to keep a decent framerate on (this is on a Xeon 2.8 GHz overclocked to 3.2).

In essence, I could run higher framerates at 1024x768 with AA/AF than my friend with his Ti4200 could at 800x600 without any AA/AF.

Edit: I am curious as to what kind of games you do play. That makes a difference in this as well. In essence, my reccomendation stays the same. Spend $200 for a nice last gen video card. You can get a 9700 Pro on e-bay for under $150.

I like right now Morrowind (and all of its mods), Mafia, Max Payne 2, Thief 3, Deus Ex, and some older fps favorites...
