Should I upgrade my SMC router's firmware?

Hi there,

I got an SMC Barricade wireless router (SMC7004AWBR) and I will be setting it up with a new wireless lan in a week or so. I have read in user opinions on PracticallyNetworked.com that some ppl had problems with the latest firmware killing their routers... my question is, should I upgrade the firmware on mine, or just leave it if everything seems fine, then if there is a problem go ahead and upgrade it?

Opinions are welcome and feedback on the latest firmware would be great 😉

Best Regards and Happy Holidays! 🙂

not sure about the routers, but i've seen issues with the SMC wireless cards where updating the firmware removed the card's ability to switch into promiscuous mode; not too cool if you're working with the code from a project like bsd-airtools for wireless beacon detection. anyways, from experience let me say when it comes to SMC if it ain't broke, don't fix it 🙂

FWIW, I've upgraded the router's firmware to 1.93s1 last week sometime; no problems. I seem to recall that the upgrade wouldn't really affect me - but I can't recall what it was supposed to do.

I've not upgraded the wireless nic cards' firmware yet, but that's because I'm lazy. 😉

Depends on what the update does. If it fixes a security hole or fixes a problem, then I'd say yes. If it's to add more functionality then you have to weigh the benefits.
