Should I upgrade my P6T_X58+L5639+24GB?

Hey guys,
For gaming purposes, should I upgrade my system? All the games run fine right now and not gaming much any more. Here's what I have?
-Asus P6T X58 chipset.
-Intel Xeon L5639 @ 3.6Ghz.
-24GB of RAM
-Sapphire Dirt 3, 6950 shaders unlocked, 2GB.
-SSDs.

So if I upgrade will there be any big improvement really?
Thanks.

for gaming, if you are playing the latest games with high settings your "6970" is probably the main problem.

What resolution is your monitor? If 1080p just get a Nvidia GTX 770 or a AMD 280X. That will allow you to play for a few more years.

Depending on your specific selection of games, this is likely true. Your 4C/8T chip @ 3.6GHz is plenty for nearly everything today can throw at it. The 6970 though is a bit long in the tooth, as already mentioned upgrading to a 770/280 or whatever would definitely get some higher fps for you.

If upgrading to X5650 will give me 400Mhz more, but the trade off is 95W vs 60W. I kind enjoy the lower current draw. Will this makes a huge difference with the additional 400Mhz? I found one for $75.
Thanks.

it's only 60W without overclock... currently your l5639 3.6GHz is probably a 125W+ CPU.

Just get a new videocard, and you'll be fine to play some of the modern games. I play games fine on the rig in my sig, which is same generation CPU.

You have the i5 overclocked. 🙂 Is it the same generation as I old i7 Xeon? 🙂
I have the Asus P6T and the it max out at around 214. However, I have only been able to get it to 200. Anything higher will get BSOD. So it seems 4Ghz is the highest I could get to with this board. So I will say another 400Mhz with the X5650. Will I see a big increase in processor performance?
I have the Sapphire R9 280X OC coming I bought used from Ebay for $165. Any advice or problem to watch out for this card? Like fan problems, or VRM overheating?
I am tempted to get the X5650 as well since it's only $75. But I don't have to hold on to the processors. I now have the i7 920 with no board. L5639 running. Now if I get the X5650, so two processors with no boards for usage. Who's going to buy them with the X58 so hard to find and at reasonable price?
Thanks.

If you already have the GPU upgrade ordered/received, I think you're just wasting money at this point.

The x5650, assuming it can hit the 200 bclk on your board, would run at 4.6 single threaded with turbo enabled (4.4 multithreaded). So, it'd be quite a bit more than 400MHz difference if it can hit the same bclk.

How did you come up with 4.4 Multithreaded? I would think 20X200=4Ghz. How could I get it to 4.4? I never use the turbo, but with turbo, I would think it goes to 21X400.
Thanks.

Mine runs @ 22X all cores and 23X 1 or 2 cores.. I had the L5639 & there's a big difference between the 2 chips.

So you mean the X5650 is quite faster? So it looks like 22 internal clock without turbo? So 4.4Ghz without turbo. Nice.

I would say if you are getting say a 3ghz+ clock on your L5639 then don't worry, there is nothing much a 6 core 12 thread westmere cannot handle.

The GPU will likely be the limiting factor if you have one for higher resolution games.
