Should I upgrade my memory??

I have an Acer off the shelf system that is stock except that I have upgraded the graphics card to a low power 500mb 9800GT. The CPU is an E4500, Vista 32 bit, 300 watt power supply.

I am confused about the memory configuration though. I have 3gb of memory, and CPU Z says that it is operating in dual channel configuration. However, the memory is one stick of 1gb and one stick of 2gb, and they are from different manufacturers.

Can this really be operating in dual channel with 2 different size modules, and would I benefit from upgrading to 2 x 2 gb of higher quality memory?? For the Vista performance index, the lowest score of all those listed is for the memory, something like 4.8 or 4.9 vs about 5.2 for the CPU and of course 5.9 for the graphics. I use the computer for gaming at 1440x900 and for encoding recorded TV to DVD, and of course surfing the net and office applications.

Not that you would notice.

Some Intel chipsets seem to be able to run dual channel with mismatching memory.

I wouldn't bother "upgrading" such a system.
