should i upgrade my klipsch

I own a klipsch promedia 4.1 setup. Is it worth it to upgrade to the ultra 5.1 setup. I game and watch movies on my pc. I love my current 4.1's, have had them since they day they came out. Does any one know if klipsch is plaining on releasing a digitial version for their ultra 5.1's.

I own a Klipsch promedia 4.2 (2x 2.1 promedia) system and absolutely love them. I'm not too sure that i'd upgrade at this point, just for a center channel though.

I don't see the big deal about adding a decoder to computer speakers if you already have a soundcard that can decode DD or DTS.

If you're looking for a bigger jump in performance, maybe a HT solution might be better for you.

I'm kind of thinking the same about my Logitech Z-680s. Is it worth upgrading to a set of Klipsch Ultra 5.1's or the newest Logitech model? If only a HT system wasn't so damn expensive...

Tu13erhead: If you think a HT setup is too expensive then dont toss your Z-680's. Thats a darn good setup and you really wont gain much by getting the newest Logitech or Klipsch system.

mrgq912: What kind of sound card do you have? Keep in mind if you have an Audigy, you wont get geniune 5.1 sound in gaming if you use the Fiber Optic or Digital Coax. As such I cant recommend any DD/DTS sound system for you right now.

I use the audigy 1 sound card.
I am thinking about getting the new X-fi platinum (from circut city for 130) and want to pair them to a good 5.1 setup. But then i thought the same thing you guys are saying, there really is not that much diff with a extra center speaker, and my 4.1 are still going strong. So then why do i need a new soundcard. I am always torn between my inner tech geek side and my logical smart buyer side.

Also what is an HT setup.

Hmm...I completely forgot that my speakers have a digital coaxial input on them. I had used optical with my SoundStorm but went to 6 channel direct when I got my Audigy 2 ZS. I figured the digital out on my A2 wouldn't work with my speakers, because the digital out is 3.5mm and the input on the Z-680 is coaxial. Can I use some sort of converter or cable?

Well, I don't mind paying fo a decent set of speakers, it's the receiver that I always forget about...

Hmm...I know someone downstairs who gets a Best Buy employee discount, maybe I'll have her buy me a gift or two. 😉

HT = hometheater.

I have an RS550MKII 5.0 set and a PB10 hooked up to a receiver that the computer is hooked up to.

If you watch a lot of movies on your PC, it might be a good idea to get a 5.1 set rather than sticking with 4.1

In DVD movies, something like 70% of the sound is supposed to come out the center channel. Games will be just fine without a center channel though.

Maybe going in to listen to some different stuff would be a good idea for you to decide if you think it might be worth it.

Something like Circuit City would have some entry level HTIB systems to check out.

(HTIB = home theater in a box)
In a HTIB system, you're going to get a receiver, 5 to 7 speakers, and a sub.
Wiring will be included for sub and speakers... and some will come with a DVD player also.

Check out AVSforum for some more ideas. They even have a HTIB area.

BB used to carry a pretty decent Athena line of speakers but it looks like the ship has sailed on those.

If you can go in to demo some stuff at BB, that would be a good idea. If there's something you like, see how much you can get it for from your friend vs how much it is online.

Oh, and if either of you guys are going to get speakers and reciever separate, check out adding a dayton 12" sub vs whatever you could find at a retail store for close to the price.

Another place to look for deals is refurb stuff.

You can get receivers for about half price if you're willing to go refurb. ecost has a good selection including Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, etc.

If you're hooking up to a computer, make sure you get a receiver with 5.1 analog input unless you're not playing games or want to get a card that can encode DD in real time.
