Should I upgrade my CPU?

I built my first computer about 2 years ago, and I have a socket 939 Athlon 3000

I'm a teacher, and I record my lessons, and I find myself using movie maker all the time capturing and editing video. However, I like to be doing powerpoint as well, and other tasks.

Will I benefit from a dual core processor? Which one do you recommend with a budget of $200? Is that too much?

hmm video enditing, yeah AMD X2 64 are really cheap now, but do make sure that ur motherboard supports X2.. u might need to upgrade that, "might"!!

as for cpu under $200, u ahve X2 3800+ $150, and X2 4200+ $180. u do live in US right? and the $200 is $200USD?? right??

now im not sure how much u wanna edit video, i think if ur only recording, capturing, any cpu on the market besides celeron and sempron should be enough!!

yes, I live in the US. My mobo support socket 939, that's all I have to worry about right? Don't some x2 chips support socket 939?

i used a sempron 2400+ (scoket A) to do all sorts of video editing and encoding. infact i transcoded about 400+ anime eps on it.

so any processor is enough for it !!!
but you will se major improvements across the board with a dual core. esp if you pick sometihng above a x2 3800+

IT's just that I use windows movie maker. I captured a 45 min. clip, and it took like 30 mins for it to transfer...plus I couldn't do other apps.

yeah u definitely need dual core i woud suggest X4200 if u want to encode video fast , and still doing stuff on the comp while encoding liek browsing

but again make sure ur motherboard is compatible , u dont wanna put the cpu in and fry ur board n cpu ... b/c of electric imcompatibility, that happened to me once ...

better to be safe then be sorry later

so in terms of compatibility...how do I check this? I thought it was enough to know that the cpu fits a socket 939?

hmm, well u gotta know ur motherboard maker, model , and check their website for cpu compatibility

now i am saying this b/c from pentium d to conroe, it still LGA775 , same socket, however pentium d uses VRM9 and conroe uses VRM11, so they r electrically incompatible

i am not sure whether thats the case for AMD or not,

nv,m:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_939

notice it has AMD X2 as cpus, so that means AMD X2 socket 939 cpu should be supported by ur motherboard, however i would check the manufacture's website for BIOS update,

also i think AMD X2 require special driver from AMD, after u install X2 and boot into windows thats the first thing u should do, is install AMD's dual core driver

HEre's what I got from the MSI website. I have
K8N Neo4 Platinum

CPU

? Supports 64-bit AMD® Athlon? 64FX/64 processor (Socket 939)
? Supports 3000+, 3200+, 3500+, 3800+, 4000+, FX53 and FX55

does this mean I cannot put a dual core cpu?

You can... I have the K8N Neo4 in a 3rd rig and it runs a x2 3800+

You just need the latest bios to be sure. I'd say Dual core would be a great investment for you if you're looking to do multiple tasks at once and increase overall productivity.

I would definitely upgrade to a dual core. You will be able to use your computer while encoding, and performance will be much improved if it's dual-core optimized. It makes a huge difference for multitasking!

that should be enough right?
I would say to get the 3800 X2 with your budget. That should be a good compromise and not have you eating Ramen noodles to pay for it, lol.
