Should I upgrade my computer?

Should I upgrade my computer? I'm running Athlon XP 1700+, PC2100 512MB, etc......... and my internet explorer is f**ked up so I might as well upgrade my computer while I'm formatting my computer. It's gonna take me a few days to set everything up again. I play a few games - Warcraft3 and counter-strike mostly, and my current computer can handle the load pretty well. So, what would you do if you were me?

If your XP is a TbredB, I'd say switch out the board for an nForce 2 and start overclocking like no other 🙂 I have an 8RDA+, and I run my 1700+ Tbred B mobile at 2600+. My Crucial 2100 ram does 2700 no problem. Your ram could very well do 2700 too.

If it does what you want, I'd say no. The reformat will make it feel a bit faster too until you load it up again with whatever junk messed up IE to begin with. For about $300 you can have a near top of the line Athlon XP base to start with. XP2500 overclocked to 2.2 Ghz (XP3200) for $80, DFI Infinity motherboard (very overclocker friendly) for $93, and some Muskin PC3200 Level I 2x256 dual pack for $121. That's gonna cost $294... that's about the minimum upgrade I'd recommend at the moment (even if you don't overclock the CPU). If you get anything slower than that you won't notice a very big difference. You might also consider just getting a new video card to eliminate that bottleneck... certain 9600 Pro's can be had for about $140.

Thanks for the replies guys. If I had to upgrade, I'd upgrade to those 64-bit AMD CPUs. I haven't been keeping myself up to date with the technology news, but I think those CPUs are called Clawhammer? I'm wondering if these CPUs are just as overclockable as older gen. CPUs? I'm looking for feedback from people who own this setup. Thanks.

Also, I was thinking of just getting Athlon XP 2400+ (the fastest my motherboard can handle without overclocking) and upgrading my video card also. I checked with newegg.com and the processor is only ~$70 and depending on the video card price, my upgrade can be less than $250. 🙂

What are you considering? What do you want to spend?

oops.. didn't see your reply. With the 2400+, you might notice a minor improvement, while a nice video card will make gaming quite a bit better.
