Should I upgrade my cable modem?

Hi all,

I have a Toshiba PCX1000 cable modem that was given to me maybe around 2+ years ago by TW Road Runner.

I just got a new Linksys router that's been resetting randomly with it. Linksys told me I might need to upgrade my cable modem to something newer.

Does anyone know if Road Runner will let you upgrade to something newer? My cable modem is kind of old so maybe I should and hope it solves some problems?

Thanks for any info!

If the modem functions fine with a computer hooked to it, and only "malfunctions" with the router, I would suggest that the router is at fault. I would not toss money at a new modem till I could somehow prove it was at fault.

Carry the router over to a friend's place and try it out on his cable modem, and/or unplug your cable modem from the router and just generate a lot of local traffic to test it out. Try and recreate the problem without your particular cable modem in the equation, so you can be sure its not the router.

If you're leasing the cable modem from Road Runner, you could try asking for an upgrade and see what they do for you.
