I've been researching and deliberating whether it is worthwhile to upgrade my 2 year old Antec TrueBlue 480w PSU to a new Antec TruePower II 550w PSU. Please help me decide whether this is a useful or necessary $80 expenditure. Some of the things I've read and am considering are:
- Apparently the Antec TPII-550 is the best or one of the best selling PSUs currently (according to pricewatch.com and 5 out of 5 stars average user rating from 800+ newegg users who bought it).
- In theory however, my current 480w should do the job ok considering I will never crossfire and just use the one X1900XT. I don't have tons of things inside, example just 1 hard drive, onboard sound. Althought stabiliity is a concern of course, I'm not OCing, and really don't plan to.
- Although I read rumors that 1st gen TruePower PSUs used cheap capacitors, mine seems to work fine and hasn't blown up. In theory, I could just be happy with my current PSU since it will likely work, and a year or two down the road upgrade my whole system to Intel/AMD 2nd gen dual/quad core CPU, new RAM/HD, next gen DirectX 10 video card, Vista, and whatever new top-of-the line PSU is out then (maybe a future TruePower 3.0).
Should I do it, or is it an unecessary $80 with little to no benefit (I'm not rich)?
