Hey all,

I have an XFX HD 6950 2Gb.. pretty good card, overall I'm really happy with it.

Here's the thing: A friend offered me his GTX 580 for my card and $50.. I'm not really sure I should pass it up.

There's nothing I can't play in max everything for the most part (okay, maybe I get 45 fps in some, and 60 would be nice with a GTX 580....)

What do you guys think?

Do it or not?

a gtx580 is certainly worth 50 bucks over a 6950 so yeah I would do it. with your cpu you will never see the difference though.

EDIT: I see you changed the sig to reflect your Q6700 at 3.6 which is much better.

Well, big deal though.. At the end of the year I'm going LGA 2011 anyway, and I'm only doing 1080p resolution.. Old sig too.

well you had hypothetically suggested you may go from 45 to 60fps in some games and that will not be happening with a stock Q6700. at 3.6 though it should be an improvement in most games for sure.

ah really you don't think so?

I thought scaling issues like that were only related to SLI/CF graphics cards

For $50... why not? I would do it. Worst case you could always turn around and sell it used for $400, buy a new 6950, and pocket more than the $50 you spent ;)

its worth the 50$ upgrade to get the 580 then.

But Id feel bad for your friend, those 580s were/are expensive.

499$ for a 580 vs 244$ for a 6950.

for 50$ hes getting robbed... but yeah differnce in performance shouldnt be too big, like 10% or so in most things.

Why is he doing the sale? a game he cant play? needs the money badly?

I don't really know actually.. I'm gonna assume he could use the $50 more than the video card heh, and I presume if there's only about a 10% difference, he won't even feel it in games really so..

Maybe he got a deal on the 580 or something, as is coming out ahead either way.

Otherwise, it doesn't make sense for him to give it to you for only $50.00 and your 6950. He could sell the card himself for like $450.00 and go buy a 6950 2GB for $260.00 after rebate, netting himself a profit of $190.00

Something sounds fishy, if you ask me. :hmm:

Reference 580s have hit 950 core on air.. Definately do it

I wouldn't count on a 950 core on a reference unless you don't mind having your fan ramped up to 100% the whole time your gaming. That's one of those benchmark it and put it back down to a reasonable level afterward.

Real men can handle 100% fan :)

For $50 its a steal, but then again if that 6950 is modded to 6970, the difference will be within 10%... Still worth it if you wanna try PhysX or whatever else Nvidia has that AMD doesnt I guess

I would change it in a heart beat, but the deal is so good it makes me think there might be something wrong with the 580. If that's not the case, then definitely yes.

yes too good to be true deals,... usually are.

Either your friend needs cash really badly, and your robbing him (which friends shouldnt do, loan him 50$ or so instead), or theirs something wrong with the card.

I would do it, but find out why he wants to sell the 580 1st.

Maybe he's PSU can't handle it? OR he wants to play DA2. Either way, first find out why he's selling.

Its a steal though.

I'm gonna do it.

What he explained to me was this, he's been trying to sell it for 2 weeks now for $400, then went down to $380, $360, and now $350. He's seen my card go for $300 and get sold apparently pretty fast.

I am in Canada, so maybe the craigslist economy is slightly different, I dunno..

As such, he's not really doing me a favor. He can't get more, and he still wants a decent video card anyway.

That's what he told me.

It doesn't make a huge amount of sense to me, but I checked kijiji (ebay's craigslist if nobody has heard of it) and it pretty much is consistent with what he told me.

I sure hope nVidia marketing is watching this. This info couldn't be more useful to them if they wrote it themselves. ;) Would be helpful in deciding what price to set the 580 at after the 590 is released. They sure as hell can't leave the 580 @ $500 and release the 590 @ $1000, considering the price of the 6990. Judging from the pole the 580 will sell real well @ $400 and likely the 590 @ $800.
