Should I upgrade cable modem to DOCSIS?

I have had Road Runner for two years. At the time I was setup I was given a Motorola CyberSurfer Wave modem and have been using it without any problems since. At that time DOCSIS was not used in my area, DOCSIS is now used throughout the system. My friends who have gotten their service within the past year have all been given the Toshiba cable modems. Time Warner will swap out my modem if I want, but I do not know if there is any benefit to doing so. All opinions are appreciated.

I'm not sure if it was the cable modem or the local network, but when @Home switched out my Motorola cable modem for the DOCSIS Toshiba, I saw a VERY big difference in terms of latency, packet loss, and transfer rates.

Note: I was using a different gateway after the upgrade.

Probably good, because he'd then comment on how it was like. :)

I think that with DOCSIS, you can't uncap your upload speeds.

Some old model cable modems allows you to "hack" it and be able to get A LOT faster speeds. My new 3Com RR modem doesn't allow that.

In my area they say they'll be switching over to DOCSIS in Feb, and that we had to get the new modems. They scheduled appointments and have already swapped the cable modems. I won't be able to tell if its faster until Feb, but they did take our precious LanCity cable modems. I never uncapped it, but my friend who is a warez jockey is still reeling. He only gets 1/8 the uploads he used to.

Cable guys told us the upgrade was mandotory, I'm doubting that seeing as how yours works right now, but it couldn't hurt to have them come and swap em.
