Should I tell on my coworker?

It's just a part time weekend job for us. We come in at 6am and leave at 6pm (1 hour for lunch). We clean the university center for William and Mary University in Williamsburg. It's pretty easy. We just check the bathroom and trashcans every few hours. He left earlier this morning to go make runs for his other job (fixing atm's) cause they had no one else to do it today. He also did this yesterday. Now he's a cool guy and helped me yesterday to get a battery from walmart for my car cause it wouldn't start. But, since I came in late today he called and said I came in at 7 (still the car is dying on me - think its the spark plugs and I couldn't get it started again until 7am). So I'm only going to be paid for 10 hours today and him for 11 even though he's only been here for like 3 or 4 hours before he left. He still hasn't come back yet and he has to turn the keys in since he's the one that checks them out from the police station. EDIT he just called, he'll be back about 5:40 or so. Should I tell? Because he's getting the whole 11 hours today (only here for 4)not to mention his overtime from his job during the week.

cliffs:

coworker is the one who checks out the keys

left work to do overtime on his other job thats during the week

he tells them when i come in so like today at 7 instead of 6 cause of car problems, i only get paid for 10 hours instead of 11

today he'll get that overtime plus the entire 11 hours today (only here for about 4)
i don't think they'd like it to know that he is leaving (did it yesterday)

job is pretty easy and he did alot of stuff by himself before he left cause he knew he wouldn't be here and didn't want me to have that hard of a day

Wow, he told them you were 1 hour late because of car trouble when he's missed way more than that to do stuff at his other job? I'd be pretty pissed off about that.

wait he told on you on something already? then heck yea rat the little bastard out.

its not really telling, he just lets the main boss know that we are all present and accounted for. i don't think the main boss cares if i'm a few minutes late or not but i don't get paid. but he's not here and he will. i don't think thats right

yeah but he did help me out with going to walmart to check on my car yesterday (for a battery) so he's not a jerk or anything. that makes it harder..

Are you doing more work to make up for his absence?

not really. we work about 2-3 hours total out of the 11 we are here. its mostly just picking up paper towel, emptying trash cans. no one really uses the student center during the summer so for most of the day i've been relaxing (im still at work btw) but i'm here in case a major mess happens. he's not

meh toss up. but the fact he told you were late...

but if he tells them i'm there, but he doesn't hear from me, and later it turns out i'm in the hospital from an accident on the way to work, where does that leave him? lol. thats what he said. makes sense though. yeah its a hard toss up..

he was going to pick me up this morning but since my car started i'd figured to just go ahead and make it to work (about a 10 minute drive)

Well... look at it this way...

if I poop on you, but clean it up, does that still make it okay?

HELL NO.

He ratted on you for something I'd bet he is guilty of, then leaves work to do another job. It would be a different story if he left because he had to go tend to his sick kid or something, but he's being paid for one job that he's not doing while at another job.

That's MORALLY wrong.

I voted blackmail, but you should do this:
Tell him it's not fair he gets paid for a full day's work when he's not there a full day
Recommend he spot you the money for the 1 hour you were late.
If he refuses, RAT RAT RATTY RAT HIS ASS!

BTW, the true Battosai would've beheaded your coworker by now.

In this type of situation It would seem benificial for both of you to cover for each other. There just may be some things that you nor him can cheat on. Like you arriving late. His argument was pretty decent.

But if it really doesn't affect you and how your work. You covering for his butt, may pay out later. Yes you are upset you didn't get paid for one hour. But he may help you out later down on the road.

And he seems to be helping you get to work, that is pretty nice of him...

If it was me I would be really bothered by it. Though that can vary depending on what I would have to do if he isn't there. But i would probably get over it.
