Hi,

I know there must be lots of IT guys here in the board. I am a newbie in this industry, and would like to ask your guys' advice about transfer within company.

Currently, my position is an entry level engineer, and have worked there about a year. I just found there is a senior level position which match my background very well, and I hope, if possible, I can transfer to that position.

My question is : should I talk to my manager about this first? Or should I talk to the recruiting manger, and if there is good chance, talk to my current manger then. Which is a professionial way to do this?

If I talk to my manager first, and then wasn't able to get the position, that will be awkward. But on the other hand, if the recruiting manager ( I am sure he knows my current manager well) talked to my manager about this, but I haven't informed him, that is also bad.

ANy kind siggestion? Thanks a lot!

I would normally ask the direct supervisor about a higher position before i actually apply through HR. That way i can obtain some feedback "off the record" before i actually apply and know my chances.

Talk to the recruiting manger 1st, then after the interview, let your direct manager know about the interview and your desire to move up in the company. Don't forget to send a letter/e-mail to your HR dept showing interest in the new position. :)

There is actually a policy covering this where I work. First you have to talk to your current supervisor and negotiate a possible release date. Then you get to go apply for the new position.

Since it's policy and people are encouraged to pursue their interests, a lot of the potential awkwardness is removed.

Policy aside, I think it is best to be open with your current supervisor. Tell him/her that you are looking for career development opportunities within the company.

Approach your boss first. Get feedback first on your qualifications and any internal quals for the position.

If your boss recommends you, then go forward with confidence. Most bosses will not try to hold down a person.

All of my promotions and transfers were done through HR first, then once accepted I talked to my immediate boss.
