the IT person here at the office just asked me if I wanted a 21" CRT monitor. they are throwing it out. i used to think it was awesome, about 9 years ago when i started here. it's an NEC Multisync.

should i take it?

I'd assume it's old and thus, blurry. I'd prefer the crispness of an LCD but if you want it for backup, take it.

21 inch CRT? you got a truck to take it home? that has to be huge! not to mention heavy.

i kept my 19 inch crt though. as a backup incase one fo the LCD's fail.

I considered one here at work too ... 22" behemoth. Decided against it because no one else wanted to help me get it to my car. Well, that, I seriously wasn't sure the table I use as a desk would support the weight long-term :)

Don't do it ... the missus will likely be pissed :p

edit: you could donate it to a school for a vision-impaired kid maybe?

i have 2 17" CRTs in the basement collecting dust as it is.

no use having an even larger piece of crap sitting around.

I used to have this beast of a computer desk, that was from like wwII or something. That thing handled my 22" crt no problem. But without a ginormous desk giant crt's are pretty useless.

Only take it if you have an immediate need for it ... CRT's are hard to even give away these days.

yeah, it would really only be worth it if you do any photo or video editing.

i have a dual monitor setup, with one CRT and one LCD, ghetto, yes i know.... but dual desktops is just something i need nowdays, once you use it, you cant go without it... i have a viewsonic 19" perfectflat A95f CRT, and an Elements 17" 1280x1024 native res LCD, i'd say both have there ups and downs. The CRT is better for low res video (like regular TV, or most divx's... but for HD stuff, i think i'd have to say the LCD takes the cake, it has darker blacks, and deeper color for high def content. both monitors run 1280x1024 and i've managed to make the picture look the same across both displays with the color calibrater built into NVIDIA's nview setup, and the 19" has a viewable area thats pretty darn close to exactly the same as the 17" CRT, so the picture lines up the same side by side, it's not off at all, i couldnt beleive how close the monitors viewable area was to eachother, but it is... works pretty good watching widescreen stuff spanned across both displays.

I'd take it ...
Got a thiple monitor setup on my main desk (2 PCs, using synergy so I can treat the second PC as if it were just another window on the main box, 24inch LCD in the middle and then 19inch CRTs on each side), I wouldn't mind making my secondary machine into a dual monitor setup :)
