Should I take the job or no?

Just ran into a rather shocking bit of info this morning. I got asked to take over my current boss's job. He's in charge of all of the technology end of our company. I'm chief IT admin. He's being promoted to GM of another facility we're aquiring in Arizona.

My job is to oversee all IT related items for customers and on campus (that's our main facility), maintain the lan, all high capacity lines (T1, T3, etc) company and customer servers, etc. Normal IT admin uber geekish stuff. My boss is in charge of all technology that the company handles. It's mosty a paper pushing job, very little tech hands on. The job will pay an additional $5k a year (I currently make $65k now) plus bonuses and raises for other things.

My dillema is this. I'm most comfortable in an IT environment surrounded by computers, networks, servers, etc. Normal geek stuff. I can do his job without much of a problem, and I've gotten nothing but perfect 4 star employee ratings since getting here 4 years ago. I'm also comfortable with my current Assistant chief admin (The man directly under me) taking my place and doing a very good job of taking care of the network and everything and doing a great job in my place. I'm afraid in the flurry of paperwork I'd feel like a fish out of water and I'd definately miss the daily interaction with all the tech I'm so used to handling.

What do you think? Jump in, take the possition, take the challenge? Or should I decline and stay where I'm at, where I'm comfortable?

Hmm...tough call. How are you doing, financially? Managing well with the current $65K?

be honest with yourself. Do you want to be stuck in the same job the rest of your life, or do you want advancement?

You might be comfy now in your job, but once it becomes routine, you'll get bored. I would jump at it and take the position.

Yes, you might like doing all the tech stuff but this is your opportunity!

Do you want to be stuck doing that for the rest of your life? Granted, it's fun but I'm sure this position would be a learning experience or at least a stepping stone to bigger and better things in the company.

If you feel you can handle it, onward and upward! Good luck.

Hey, uh, where's the opening? LOL ...

Take a leap man ...

You could always give the new Chief IT guy extra responsibility, and take some of the "lower" stuff ... he'd never know ...

Yes. Take it. Even if you don't like it, it will be a good experience that you can use later on to get a different job.

Personally, I would take it, this way you'll gain experience as a manager

and to have better understanding of your company and the business world.

i'm IT manager at a small company (20 users/machines) and i only make 14/h :Q ;)

I'd take it for the experience, and hell you might even like it more, can't hurt right? Do you have the option of going back to your old position? I dunno, I'd go for it personally.

Hmm. Well I know we're adding two new facilities (one of them is the one my boss is going to manage) so I know we'll have a lot more stuff to handle in the IT department. So who knows. I may be doing more paper pushing, but I may get more chances to actually be hands on still with the network. :)

As much as we wish it wasn't, reality dictates that companies these days have a lot of layoffs. It's better to have some managerial experience that you can later put on a resume if and when you may be laid off. That's one more thing you can pad your resume with if you need to.

I would take the opportunity and STILL mess around with computers. Heck you are the boss, can't you help out with the other tasks?

At a company i'm acquainted with, if you make too much money, you're more likely to be laid off when budget problems happen.

Can you do his job temporarily to see if you would like it then if not stay with what you are doing? If you think you would enjoy it then go for it, if not then why would you want to do something you wouldn't enjoy?
