i have the option to loan a comp through eligibility at the university but it just meets the requirements for win xp and such... should i take on that or just bring my comp?(the one i am using now obviously)

the problem with that i see is that i would have to leave it their no? then when breaks come i would go home and i woudn't have my comp for use as it would be at the university?

so i would like to know what do you guys did/do for those who went off to college ?

I didn't go home much, but when I did I brought my computer. You have to fly I assume? Then I would consider getting a sff case and cut my OC'ing while in college.

Now as a freshman, I used a cheap computer thinking it wouldn't make a difference (like the loaners they are offering). Drove me mad. I would not consider using a low end computer while paying serious money to be at school.

I brought mine home and back or stored it at a friends place nearby because of theft problems in dorms anytime I was gone longer than a weekend. After 2 years or so I had my own place then no problem. If you dont wanna bring your comp I suggest taking out a student loan that doesn't start to gain interest until after you graduate and build your dream machine or buy a nice lappy. I did it because I needed a dually for graphic stuff.

I brought my desktop + 20" LCD monitor along w/a new IBM laptop

I find I use them both everyday (for work...I don't game as much as I thought I would)...so I would definitely say it was a worthwhile purchase for me.

Take your own for sure. No question.

Yeah. I took my desktop and old CRT to school. Brought it back home for summer, now have nice LCD (left CRT with a friend who lives in houston, I'll get it back to use as secondary when I go back).

Loaning a POS comp would suck. Your own, all the way.

I take the laptop back & forth btwn dorm & home. If I only had a desktop & no laptop, I would install VNC or something similar and connect to my machine from home.

Or if you're on linux, use something like cygwin and ssh in.

(As it is, I already do these things w/my laptop connected to my desktop when I'm at home).

Edit: imo your desktop should come with you...you ought to have a good computer when you're at school. You can get a pos box for home.
