Should I take multi-vitamins?

I asked my friend if I should take them, he said ask a doctor first. Now since most multi-vitamins are on the shelves, they would not normally put harmful stuff there, especially things that are intended to help the body.

I am starting to work out a little bit and my diet is not as balanced as I wish it was. There is little time to prepare ahead and I am too uncoordinated.

So is taking multi-vitamins a good move?

How is centrum?
 
I dunno about Centrum, but I've taken standard vitamins (100% of virtually everything) most of my life. Gives me a nice energy boost in the morning, and the rest of my day tends to go better as well. Also, buy some Zinc pills (Zinc is not normally included in multi-vitamins, but if you can find one that has it, sweet). I've taken 100% DV Zinc for the last year or so and have had virtually no allergies or major diseases.

Note: If you buy the pills separatly, they generally come in doeses of 333% per pill. I just cut them into rough thirds.

Strictly speaking, you can still OD on some of the vitamins, such as the fat-soluable ones.

Well yeah, if you take the whole bottle at one time. You can die from drinking too much water too, but I'm assuming a modicum of sense on the part of the OP.
 
I'll start out taking some centrum. I might have to go to the local pharmacy or Wal-Mart and look for good multivitamins.

What do you guys think are good multivitamins?

I seriously doubt there's any significant difference between brands. I'd just find the cheapest one that has whatever you want in it.

Get the one with the most vitamins in it. More for the $$. And stay away from the specialized (ie One-A-Day "active") unless you clinically need it. 100% across the board (or as close as possible) is the way to go.
 
Go for it. seems everyone is taking them now and days, we must be missing out on the good stuff. maybe it'll boost ur brain power who knows..
 
Costco makes a multivitamin and sells it in large doses like 500 pills to the bottle. Compares to the ingrediants in Centrum and is about half the price.

Vitamins are absolutely no substitute for a healthy diet. The common vitamins/minerals found in most marketed vitamins contain only a small percentage of the spectrum of nutrients. We have not identified everything, and for the ones that we do know about aren't found in supplementation often (green tea's ECGC, red grapes resveratrol). And these uncommon nutrients is what you should aim for because you're most likely getting iron, calcium and vitamin C. That, and these other nutrients have been shown to be much more effective antioxidants

Stuff in most supermarkets are cheap minerals in poor chemical form for body absorption, that are already found in fortified foods. In other words, your paying money to make your urine yellow-orange because your body's already getting plenty.

While stuff at centrum's level of dosage will not hurt you for an excess, megadose vitamins will. Antioxidants become oxidants at high levels.


Unless you're a talented biochemist that specializes in this field, do not attempt to go out and buy dozens of supplements and mix them together. Most individual supplements contain other minerals/stuff, and all of these things could interact together.

How is centrum?

I eat one meal a day. Work out every M, W, F. Run 15 minutes on M, do the eliptical for 30 minutes on W, and sometimes play basketball on F. I normall eat at least one meal a day with snacks here and there. Ever since I started to lift again (Beginning week of February), I have lost 13 pounds total. I don't see the need for special diet routines, etc, etc..

I'd highly recommend you know what fish oil you're consuming. What part of the fish, what kind of fish, the age of the fish, and how old the oil is. Otherwise you could run into problems.

Yes, I'm a newb at nutrition and health.

A piece of bread may not be enough. They recommend that so you don't get an upset stomach. Not really dangerous or anything if you don't, just makes your stomach a little upset. I usually take them after a medium lunch (soup and salad or similar).
 
Not all vitamins are created equal. I suggest the Solgar brand.
 
Is Centrum a good choice?

I only have that in my house right now, but if others are better I can try them out. Or if they're a better value, etc.

The main reason it is good to take multivitamins with food, is because some vitamins (like Vitamin A, E, D, K) require a little bit of fat to be absorbed (they dissolve in fat). Usually the food you eat has some fat in it - hence the recommendation to take the vitamins after a meal.

But the world doesn't come to an end if you forget to take them with food every so often. You're still going to absorb most of them on an empty stomach.
