Should I switch to Windows2000?

I've been running Win98 forever, and now I'm running WinMe. I like WinME, it's cool and all. I never really considered running Win2000 until this article on GamePC, (http://www.gamepc.com/reviews/hardware_review.asp?review=winme&page=1)where I saw that Q3 performance under Win2000 beats WinMe and Win98 both. I was always under the impression that if you're into gaming/3dscreensavers/benchmarking/overclocking/tweaking/bleeding edge drivers and stuff, like most of us here are, you should stay away from Win2000. Now I'm thinking about trying it. Anybody have thoughts about it? I guess the Nvidia drivers have matured (I have a Geforce DDR), but what about other stuff-- like my Aureal sound card, printer, scanner, etc? What about DirectX performance?

When I was running Win98 SE, I cound not get my sound card to work right in HalfLife Opposing Force. I tried several SB Live and Aureal based cards and had numerous problems. I tried the various sound cards,various drivers, several reformats of the HD and fresh installs of Win98 to no avail. I was about to either give up on Halflife OP or learn to live without a sound card, then I saw a good buy on Win2K. After installing Win2k, Half Life OP runs like a dream with sound and the computer crashes no more. Win2k all the way!!!

I don't use a screensaver, but I don't have problems with any of the other stuff you mention.

I used Tweak3D's Win2k Hard/Drive memory tweak guide to get the most performance out of my system (they have ready-made reg files to implement tweaks).

My GeForce is overclocked 150/200 in Win2k and my Athlon 600 is at 735. I have no troubles doing any of the things I did in Win98 in Win2k (besides f*&amp;king Lexmark and my Z11 printer drivers that they have constantly lied about!! :|:|)

There's a constant stream of video drivers from nVidia and all of my other hardware and software is supported.

win2000 is based on win NT, rather than the iwn9x kernel found in 95/98/98se/me, thus if you are running old dos software you may well be in trouble.

the biggest 'problem' with win200 is hardware support. If your video card has poor win200o drivers gaming performance will suffer. Things like entry level printers and scanners may not have have win2000 drivers either. Some games may not run under win2000.

i haven't moved to win2000 yet as my scanner and TV tunner cards aren't supported by win2000. however i do run dual win98/Nt4 and may try a triple boot or replace win Nt4 with win2000, as the tv card and scanner and supported in win nt4 anyway! 🙂 lol


the best bet is dual boot win me/ win2000. 🙂

by the way, win2000 is more bleeding edge than win me from what i hear. 🙂

Cheep,I`m a Gamer I use win98 OS1 I have had no problems (last count 125+ games) I have heard problems with some games in Win2000(no offense to Win2000 users) so if you are a Gamer stay with either Win98 or WinMe.

Thanks for the replies guys. Anybody else? Specifically, I play a lot of Unreal Tournament, MDK2, Soldier of Fortune, Sims, and Half-Life. Do these all work? What about Aureal Vortex2 drivers for Win2000?

Before you jump make sure ALL of your hardware is supported with Win2K drivers.
I had Win2K for a while but there were no drivers for my joystick so gaming for me was out of the question unless I used the keyboard.
The soundblaster drivers for Win2K sucked compared to Win98.
Besides Microsoft says that Win2K is for business applications only...but funny one of the first updates for Win2K was support for a large number of GAMES! Go figure!

Well, I say unless you are actually need something specific from win2k, I'd probably just stick with whatever you got. Switching operating systems is a pain in the ass. If you do switch tho, make sure you have all the drivers you need before hand.

windows 2000 is way more stable than any other windows product ive ever used. its a good choice for stability and security.

If you are a hard core gamer then you are probably out of luck.

I run Win2K, it is super stable, a bit quicker, and very powerful. Drivers have not been a problem. nVidia's drivers are fine, DDR user also. The only games I really play are Q3, UT, and NHL2000. All of them work in Win2000. Also, most games that are not Win2K supported by the mfg can be run with some simple work-arounds.

Win2000 is the way to go if you want a real OS. It is just so stable and powerful I could not believe the difference. Like I said it you are a hardcore gamer then Win98/ME is probably the way to go, personally I'll probably never go back.

Everything ran much better in Win2k except the force feedback on my wheel was completely messed up, and since I only play nfspu, that was a pain in the rear end... So I moved back to 98se. I might change my MX300 for a Live!, even thou I really like mine...
