should i start over on this pc?

here is the deal. i built a new 1.4GHz (266fsb) system this weekend. the problem is random "blue screens" on boot up (or re-boot) right after the win2k boot up screen. here are the sys specs any ideas are welcome.

Via 4.32's
1.4 Ghz Athlon, 266fsb
1 GB pc-133 kingston value
ECS K7VZA mobo
Volcano 5 hsf
80 GB WD @ 7200
GeForce 2 Pro
Linksys NIC
Que 24x Burner
400w psu/tower case

the t-bird is running 10.5 x 133. cooling is good. blue screens can happen and go away at any time. please let me know.:frown:

Kinda feels like a memory problem. Do you have a stick of registered memory to try?

all of these parts are right from new egg this past week. i tried running the mem at 100 mhz and got the same thing. anything else ?

Yeah, I'm thinking RAM problem too. Can that motherboard handle that much RAM? Are they single sided DIMM's?

nah, double sided, 512mb each. the mobo is a 3 slot good for 1.5 gb.

It's not the speed, it's the quality of the ram. AMD's like higher quality ram.

is kingston that $hitty? i built this for a friend and it screws up like this randomly, is it a possibility i could reseat it or ?

Kingston's got a good rep, but the stick of "value" ram might not be up to snuff for your system. That's why I suggested trying a different stick of memory.

*edited* Try removing one of the sticks to see if the problem persists, then try the other one. You may have a stick not up to spec.

Make sure you are running at cas3.

Try a diff PSU if you have one too. Not as likely as ram, but it can be.

what do i need to check out in BIOS to make sure ram settings are correct ? should i just load fail safe or ?

Hmmm. another thought. You could try bumping your I/O voltage up a notch or two.

I believe that default CAS settings are 3. Look in Advanced Chipset features. It might say "Sdram cycle length".

rusty how shall i bump up my i/o voltage. i would rather not do the L7 thing if i dont have to and the mobo wont let me adjust, i agree that would be a good idea do you have any suggestions?

also its not just a blue screen but a "stop error" screen with about 5 codes (0x00000001e, etc...).

You can adjust the I/O voltage in CPU setup in your bios. You'll have to enable user define to adjust it. Just highlight it and hit the plus or minus to adjust it.

this is different then v core right? how much should i move it ?

I'd try upping the voltage one increment at a time, but don't take it too high. ( I've had mine up to 3.8 with no problems, but it was hotter)
