Right now i have a Palimino AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (hits 1650 at default voltage :|) and a ECS K7S5A. however, i'm planning to buy a new motherboard and CPU for my family, but i'm thinking of spending an extra $30 CDN to get a Thoroughbred Stepping B 1700+ to replace the one i'm using now. I'm planning to pair it up with a MSI K7N2-L, and was wondering whether it's worth the $30 or should i just keep the $30, get a AMD Duron 1.3 and give it to my family and just keep my Pali and run it on the nForce2? Thx :D

i'm upgrading my brother to a t-bred 1700+ so i can buy myself a t-bred 2100+. why buy a duron when you can upgrade yourself and give family members sloppy seconds?

Get the TBred, but get a 2100+...and get an NForce2 mobo, like the Epox 8RDA+. You won't be sorry...give the Pally to the family.

Since you've bought a K7N2, just don't be alarmed when the voltage adjustment doesn't work. It will work the first time but many users of K7N2 have experienced that in order to change the core voltage (subsequent to first adjustment), you would have to set it at "H/W default" and reboot then change the voltage. I have experienced this also as my wife's K7N2-L was unstable when overclocked w/ 1.625 voltage. I tried numerous times to increase the voltage but it never happened until one day I read numerous posts regarding this problem on another forum (MSI's website or nforcershq.com, maybe amdmb.com).

Also, any adjustment to the dimm voltage will not work although it provides an option for it from 2.5~2.7: I also experienced this. Although K7N2 does not have all the features and overclocking options of other brands, it's a very stable board and performs quite well (10.5x200 w/ a XP1800+), and best of all, it was $30 cheaper than my Abit NF7-S. I've heard that an updated bios will be released very soon. Hopefully, the problems I've mentioned will be addressed.

Thanks for that info about the MSI board. This verifies what I suspected. (I kept raising the voltage in bios but it kept reading the same when I checked it through the included diagnostic tools)

Rio Rebel,

Maybe we should start an official MSI nForce2 MB thread in the MB section.:D They have the official thread for all nForce2 boards except MSI.:frown:

And my Soltek SL-75FRN-L Golden Flame :frown: So I started an *Unofficial* thread :D You should do the same for your boards ;)

I actually got this idea from your "unofficial" thread.:);)

Well, i probably shoulda checked the chip markings.. but forgot too.. and damn that board is tight around the CPU area, but my CPU runs real nice and cool. It says it's at 50 (which was what my Pali was at on my ECS K7S5A) but the heatsink feels a lot cooler. I do get a funny problem where my motherboard makes some sort of electrical hiss or some funny scratchy sound in the middle of the board when the system is under load (such as scrolling websites, running Prime 95 etc.) and it is in sync! lol... at any rate.. right now it's sitting at 11x166 1.83ghz.. @ default voltage and i'm hopping it would hit 2.0+ ghz. Btw... are the multipliers unlocked on this CPU? I hear the higher multipliers are unlocked. It's a T-Bred B stepping ( i checked that much out :D), since i'm running Hynix PC 2700 DDR-Ram, so dun think it can handle 200mhz FSB, but if the multiplier is unlocked.. then hopefully i'll get it to it's full potential :)

Did you buy an MSI K7N2? I thought this board unlocks all the multipliers. I know it does on my 2500+ barton.

Yup.. that's the board i got... i haven't tried with dif multipliers yet... although i'm at 2ghz now! WOohoo! Default voltage too! definately not regretting spending the extra $30! 400 mhz more :) Although i'm still wondering why there's this funny electrical sound kinda wizzing there

Well... found out why it is buzzing :D apparently it's a loose capacitor? Someone on nforcerhq told me and said i should RMA.. so guess i'll bring it in tomorrow and get a new one.. damn... was hoping for a 100% worry free installation. :( Ahh well... still a great board.. i hit 12x180 (2.16ghz) @ 1.70 volts.

AXDA1700 DLT3C 9570486260420
JIUHB0308SPMW

What does that mean? Good oc'er?
