i currently have a 64 MB gainward geforce3 ti200@225/520 and it performs pretty decently, but it's starting to show its age when i try to bump up the eye candy

i'm thinkin about getting a radeon 9500 from newegg or allstarshop with the hopes of successfully modding it to a 9700.

1. what are the odds the mod will work (roughly)?

2. if the mod doesn't work, would it be a worthwhile upgrade?

3. if the mod doesn't work, do u think Doom 3 will run well on the card?

4. if i get the radeon and decide to sell my GF3, do u think $60 shipped would be a decent price? not sure how much it would be worth.

thanks

1. No idea. (I refuse to "mod" certain things. So I can't say)

2. No idea. (I skipped right over GF3 recently and went from a GF2 MX to a GF4 Ti4200. Also, never owned an ATI based card)

3. Probably, since I think they are working hard to target it for current/slightly older hardware. You may not get to turn up all the eyecandy at the highest reolutions though. I could be wrong here.

4. Mostly I think sellers use NewEgg and the like for a referance. See how much you can get the item there (or an equivelant) and subract 20%

i don't think that you'll be able to mod them...the initial batch was modable because ATI couldn't get enough of the cards out so they just started selling their 9700pros as 9500s and disabled a couple of stuff...I bet you that now all the 9500s out there are really 9500s 🙂

My friend picked up a Sapphire Radeon 9500 Non Pro 128mb and his softmodded to a 9700, he put the vantec iceberg on it because the stock heatsink would not allow him to overclock it very much. He would get a lot of artifacts and it would crash before he put the new heatsink on after it works like a charm, hes got it running at 9700 Pro speeds without any problems. Sell your GF3 Ti200 for 50-60. I definatly think its worth the upgrade to have a Direct X 9 compatible video card.
Thats just my 2 cents.
