Should I ship something without actually receiving payment?

Well, the buyer and I had a long chat last night and everything look cool and fine. He paypaled me the amount but the payment will take 5-8 days to process so I haven't actually received the payment yet. He wants me to ship the stuff before the payment is cleared. I believe him as we had good chat session, but what sort of protection does paypal have in case anything went wrong?

nope.

NOT unless you really trust the guy. I would wait until the money cleared.
 
I'd go by his heat rating -- if it's 50+ with no negatives, I wouldn't hesitate to ship.

Edit: Paypal isn't really going to protect you at all..
 
have you dealt with the guy before?
can you get to his home easily and get your item back if payment bounces?
is he an established trader with good refs?

if any of the questions receive a no as an answer then don't send.
 
If he has references, I would ship. But, what do you mean the payment won't be processed for a couple days? Does it show up in your Paypal account?

I have 2-3 heat but i NEVER ship first (well depends on who im dealing with). I want my payment in hand before i ship.

But i guess it would depend on who and what i am selling.

Some people send out paypal with an echeck, and that takes several days to clear.

Ahh, then if he's some random dude, I would wait.
 
Well, he use debit card via paypal. I really didn't think it would take 5-8 days to process...I mean...it's almost instantaneous for me to send money, but I have my paypal linked with bank account.
 
Depends on the guy. I only have like 25 or something and have asked people to ship before I could pay them (just did the transfer from my bank account, will paypal them in the 3-5 days it takes for paypal to confirm) and most have been nice.

I've done the same to others as long as they seem trustworthy like been around the forums or something.

Are you sure? I remember having someone do that to me, but it wouldn't go through, it would just say you have the money, but not really.
