With the $30 120gb western digital deal I was thinking about setting up a raid. Is it worth it? I mainly use my comp for gaming so shoter load times is what I'm looking for.

No. RAID will increase load times as the OS has to detect the RAID controller.

Ummm, that's ridiculous. It will increase your boot time slightly and greatly increase load times in games like BF1942 where it loads a map before playing a level.

You mean decrease load times, hehe :) But yes, increase in performance!

That is, if you go Raid 0.

Wow thats totally wrong.

Anywho, it'll increase the load times of game signifigantly, WinXP boots wouldn't be noticeably slower.

The only thing is if it's wrth it to reinstall winXP for the upgrade :p! I think it's worth the time, being the 1st guy in the game on BF1942 to hop in the place 1st :)! Makes it more fun!

JEEEEZE, it will DEcrease the time it takes to load game files...... :p

If it's on-board, you'll see nice increases of transfer rates (MB/s) in benchmarks, and some DEcrease in the
time it takes to load game files. (I'm making a lot of assumptions about your system and OS here)

Use Norton Ghost to transfer system from a single drive to an array which makes OS re-install unnecessary.

Software raid controllers is just another marketing scheme to get another 20$ out of you when you purchase a new motherboard. If you really believe that stripe 0 offers that big of a performance increase then the old adage applies. A fool and his money are lucky to come together in the first place. If your going to run raid, then do it right, none of this Micky Mouse software crap.

I've been assuming this was hardware raid..... how did we decide it was software raid (which, yes, is not good for much of anything)

-Sid

(and why do we even bother since this hydro1234 person has not even responded)

As I stated, It will increase OS load times. Please read my statements prior to stating I am wrong. Plus he didn't specify what RAID level, 0 will be better for Game/Program load times, 1 for redundancy, 0+1 for slight improvement of Program load times with Data redundency.

As stated, it doesn't matter he hasn't replyed.

If you were to do a simple raid 0 array load times of games will be faster but I doubt anything very significant. I'm not sure where people are getting crap about it taking significantly longer

I don't believe os load time is an issue either.
