I need to save up $25,000+ by January 2008 and I have a lot of debt as well. I was stupid and bought a 2005 350z a couple of months ago and the insurance (1200 for 6 months) and the car payments are making it really hard for me to save up any money.

What would you guys do in my situation? I like the car a lot, but there are just more important things to me right now that I need to save up money for.

Please don't b&tch at me about how stupid I am. I know it was a dumb thing to do and it's a dumb thing to get rid of the car too. I just want to know if I should cut my losses now or in a few months.

This is just something I have to do. Please offer any help you guys can. Thanks!

Why do you need to save up 25K+ by january 2008? Is that when your loan shark is going to put a contract out on you?

After travelling this summer, something happened. I realized that I do not want to spend the next 40 years behind a desk. I want to save up enough money so I can go backpack "around the world" for a year or so. After that, maybe get a job overseas teaching or joining the peace corps. I just need to know that travelling is the first step to discover myself and what I want out of life. I've spend my whole life trying to achieve what's wanted of me by others, but it's time I try to figure out what I want out of life. I hope you guys understand.

What you might try is to see if you can throw a sign on it and park it out on the street near work.

I've had better success this way than any other! No bull!!

Expect to take a little hit, but if you can tolerate the hit, then you can unload it. What you can do to help ease your mind, is decide in advance what the max hit you're gonna take on it is. Present that # to family and/or friends and see if they concur. That way once you're sure about a #, you can stick to it.

Whatever you do, don't take it to a dealer, otherwise bring a can of lube. Use AutoTrader, but be ready for the Nigerian Scam Squad.

You need to sell your new car at a big loss because you decided to backpack around the world?

well, if you are gonna be out of the country, then by all means, sell the car; however, be prepared to lose a couple of thousand bucks since it appears that you bought the car new.

Well, I won't be out of the country until 2008 (my expected date of departure)... but I was planning to take over my little brother's taurus or buy a beater. Losing 2 grand I can make up in a couple of months, and the savings of the car payments each months will allow me to reach my goal faster. I hope that is the case at least.

Craigslist and post it here. I'm still shocked I found a buyer for my car here.

Autotrader is a waste of money!!

Is it really that hard to understand? I'm having doubt about the entire way of living here, I don't want to save up all my money for 40 years to enjoy 5 years of senile bliss.

Autotrader really isn't all that bad. $50 bucks to run your ad indefinitely is pretty good IMO. I've received quite a few responses from my listing there as well.

Why not delay your trip 1 year and keep the car, you'll end up saving money in the long run, and you'll get the fun of driving it for another few years while your hear. It's stupid to sell it something for an event a few years later, suppose you fall madly in love in 5 months and don't wanna go to Europe, you'll be kicking yourself. Keep it.

That'd actually be a tough call. The first year is the hardest hit in depreciation. Whether the 2 month point or the 12 month point, I don't know, but I'd investigate it first before deciding to do that. My *guess* would be that the sooner you ditch it, the better.

Yeah, I don't even want to meet a girl right now. This is too important for me to let a girl mess it up. It takes a lot of money to around the world, keeping the car will delay it for a long time I believe.

I really appreciate your thoughts though, but selling it to save up money so early in the game should tell you how motivated I am. I'm even looking into getting a second job and work on the weekends outside my full time job.

Yea, and it is inspiring. However, he's just one of the many who inspired me. Check out http://www.bootsnall.com/rtw

However, if you see some of my previous posts/threads, I've pretty much decided I wanted to do this before someone led me to M-whY. His blog is constant fuel for my passion though, everyday I read about it and the more I want to do it.

Enthusiast, it has the limited slip differential, tire pressure monitor, Xenon lights etc.

Didn't want leather so I didn't opt for performance/touring. Base is only good if you want to mod it heavily.

When I sold my car, I posted both on yahoo autos and craigslist. People that call me through craigslist are not serious buyers.
